Reading and editing a maki script..?

I have been experimenting with skinning by picking apart skins that I have found and changing them to learn what all does what. I have installed winamp 5.08 and am currently working on modern skins. The problem that I have run into is that I do not know how to edit the existing maki scripts to read the way that I want them to. I have tried to read and edit in note pad however that seems to have an adverse effect on the responding winamp reactions... LOL not good at that. how do I find a program that can both read and edit a maki script. with the tutorials I find they all refer to winamp 3 and not 5.08 and I can not follow along in the tutorials... help please...
