ipod from my mac using brother to my PC

So I get 3rd gen (pretty sure) iPod from my brother and XP wants me to update it, but this will format, and lose all the music that is currently on it. I want to know if I can access this music, plus the other non-music files. My Computer sees it, but won't open the drive without formating. I installed ml_ipod thinking I could by-pass this problem. Can't figure out a way.. considering just formating, but then I'll lose SO much music. I've heard of people using the iPod with PC and Mac. What software, or special steps do I need to take to be sure this will work?

You will need to get software that allows Windows to use Macintosh formated drives.
