Open Advanced Display Settings

That is right-click on Desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced. I'd like to open it from the installer (rather than get the user to do it manually).

not sure if you can open the 'advanced' part programatically but 'rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,3' will open the 'settings' tab for you
