Streaming Windows Media Video Files
Hi
I am using Win Amp version 5.094 and have navigated to a page where there are some *streaming* video files in the WMV format. The whole POINT of them is that they buffer a little and then play immediately without the viewer having to download the file. They are supposed to automatically engage Windows Media Player. However, WinAmp wants to claim the file forcing me to either "SAVE" or "CANCEL" a download of the file. It doesn't want to STREAM the media. I have tried going to My Computer --> View --> Folder Options and associating WMV files with Windows Media Player - but this has not altered how WinAmp behaves. SHOULD it be able to stream the file ? Is this a problem that everyone using WinAmp will encounter ? |

That's how Internet Explorer works. IE will not open a file until it downloads it first. Windows Media Player intergrates into Internet Explorer as only two Microsoft products can. You can copy the link and open it into Winamp by pressing Ctrl+L.

Hmmm. It used to open and stream automatically. The situation has only changed since I installed a recent edition of WinAmp.
Is there a way I can disassociate WMV files from WinAmp and reassociate them with Windows Media Player ? I tried this with the Folder Options designations but it's not caused the consequences I had hoped for. I assume I need to make some specifications within the two software applications themselves..... |

O.K. I think I've sorted it out, it was pretty straightforward.... I removed the WMV entry in Win Amp that can be found via --->
Options --> Preferences --> File Types and now my streaming video STREAMS automatically in Windows Media Player again. I hadn't realised that people using Win Amp would meet with this cough. Is it a temporary issue ? I'd like to know if I need to put a note on my web site to let people know that they should be able to stream not download. |
