Winamp skins, Everybody likes them so...

Hello, i've been thinking of this for a lot of time but know i decited to register and write about it.

Winamp skins, everybody likes them, but i've got one Nice idea. i think it help to a lot of people. so my idea is You /winamp administrators of this web and support/ to Archivate them into 1 archive. i know its gonna be really 'fat' file, because there is a lot of skins, but i'm almost sure that 99.9% will agree with my idea. u can seperate the skins to 2 main folder 2.x, and 5.x, next will be, animation folder, music folder, games fold....

So what do u think guys? about this crazy, but good idea?

sorry for my bad english.
Your sincere user Radi.

Actually they should,
and while they're at it add all plugins and avs/md presets as well.

Then bundle it with the default installer!

What a good idea, I'm sure the bandwidth usage of people downloading a multi gigabyte sized file won't be too much...

Think about it, if the entire winamp database came to say, oh, 20gb?, then you have say 10,000 people download that on the first day, 15,000 on the second, 20,000 on the third.....

Anyone want to do the maths for me?

u thinks its 20gb, i only wants skins, cause they are thousand of little files. if they are archivated will be so much better. Lets hear what the support/administrators have to say. if they want i can give them another idea. to archivate it separately. i mean 1 archive games, 1 archive music, 1 archive tv, 1 archive computer .... this will help me too, because all the files should be 10, 20.

again: sorry for my bad english.

okey, but see my calculations and numbers of skins
there r about ~2000 /2025/ skins at this site. so lets multiply. 2025 * 0,300kb /there r so much little skins but anyway.../ = 607,5mb. its not that bad.
Attached Files
File Type: txt winamp.txt (698 Bytes, 550 views)

I don't see why anyone would want to download the entire database anyway. A lot of the skins in there suck. A lot.

An uber lot.

There is prbly a program that could do this for you though. If not, a semi-skilled programmer could do this with a few nested for loops.

Each skin is located at:

http:\\download.nullsoft.com/customize/component/<year>/<month>/<day>/S/<name>.wsz

figure out how to turn <year> from like 1999-2005, <month> from 1-12, <day> from 0-31 (all easy enough) and <filename> to * (harder i would imagine) and you could download them all.

Again, why, idk, most skins arn't worth the time, but to each their own.

Aye, and the other good thing about it is, as soon as you've downloaded this huge installer, we publish a load of new skins and it's out of date right away, or perhaps we could keep adding them the installer and people could keep on downloading massive chunks of data to get at a few additional skins....

You could make Winamp scan the server and automatically download every new and updated skin...

Why though you want to download it again even 3 months later if you are getting 5000 skins that you already had and 100 skins you didn't, with a good possibility that you don't really want half of those anyhow because they are crap or not to your taste?

As said above, idea has been mentioned numerous times in the past, never happend then, can't see it happening now.

Well...It's a bit stupid to download every skin in the database...
but, what about some kind of "menu" or..."cataloge?" with all the old skins...just the big preview image and the link below...
that's a bit more...sensible I think XD
no more thinking for today =)

You could make it a torrent.
And you could arrange it by year. One file for each year.

and actually, as long as you saved it to the proper directory from the start, I think that every time new skins were added, the torrent program (ot at least azureus) would recogonize that the old skins are there, and only download the new ones

i didn't propose that...i proposed a "menu"...just because my coputer is too slow, and whwnwver i want to look for a good skin, it takes me ages to find at least one good...so if i could have a quick access to them iit would be great
