First Punk Rock Band!?

Although it might not be really important for my favourite's band glory and honour, i begin to question if the Ramones were the first Punk Rock band.

I know bands like the Stooges and New York Dolls had some of punk's aestethics and lyrical themes and Iggy Pop is known as "Godfather of Punk". There was also a Rock group called "Ton Steine Scherben" in Germany in the late sixties who directed their lyrics very directly against authorities and conventions and forestalled much of especially german punk lyrics.

However, these acts didn't play the Ramone's untamed, fast raw rock n roll 2-minute song-sound which revolutioned the view of Music and made Malcom McLaren found the Sex Pistols to radicalize and spread the movement around the world.

But now I heard that The Dictators, who I also really like, founded little before Joey and co. And I must admit they sound quite like Punkrock. However, just give me your opinion (or historic facts)!

It's not as black & white as the first man on the moon.

Most people are comfortable with the fact that punk emerged on both sides of the pond at around the same time. I'm happy with the notion that The Sex Pistols ushered in the UK scene and the Ramones did the same over there.

Music evolves little by little, it could be that X (Stooges) + Y (New York Dolls) = Ramones.

Bah!

yeah but the Ramones played in 1974 what the Pistols adopted in 1976 after they saw the Ramones...so i'm just happy to place the Ramones before the Pistols. Although they were not really agitating. The Clash and the Dead Kennedys were the first bands with really intelligent political and social punk attitude messages...however, punk is what you make of it. And the Ramones were fucking great and I miss them. Anyway, does anybody have information about the Dictator's founding and influence?

You'd probably get more luck on google....

I have a Dictators album "Live, Fuck 'Em If They Can't Take A Joke". Unfortunately I have listened to it (yet). They also crop up on a compilation, '1234 Punk & New Wave'.

As you're a punk expert, what's your opinion on the following mixes:

The Pink Fairies ('69-'74) were the first punk band for me... though yeah, everyone has their own interpretation, whether it's MC5, NYD, Iggy, Television, The Dictators, Ramones, Damned, Pistols...

re: pu003 mix

I'm from Germany so do you know any German Punk for example like Slime, Terrorgruppe, Wizo or maybe early "Die Toten Hosen" and "Die Ärzte"?

and to DJ Egg...It's important I'm talking of Punk-Rock not Punk...for me there's a difference because the first Punk band then may have been Ton Steine Scherben from Germany...they had quite explicit anti-state and anti-police lyrics combined with a Rock Sound that is soonest to describe like Jimi Hendrix but with more angry vocals.
by the way "Punk" as an attitude might exist since homo sapiens...

anyway, I love The Ramones, and I'm going to get me some Pink Fairies now^^...greetings from overseas

As far as german music goes, I'm more into electro & darkwave. About 10% of my collection is german (10,000 or so tracks), it's much better than the current uk scene.

Ascii Disko or Anthony Rother could easilly qualify as punk. As you say, it's just an attitude.

Wot, all 1 min 32 secs? That virtually qualifies as a smooth wax disc.

I've never heard of The Pink Fairies.

Amusing name for a punk band.

'Pink pigs of Uranus' was one of the tracks that comes to mind, but I can't think of the name of the album anymore.
They were more of an acid band and loosely connected with Hawkwind as I remember them. Seen them on the same bill a couple of times.

'Let's go and freak out the trippers' was their usual approach to a gig.

Is that an early form of skin-head?

The MC5 have to be the first punk band cause they played at the demonstrations outside the '68 Democatic convention. It's been said that the police riots, that swept through the convention with mass arrests and handed the election to Nixon, started at the MC5 concert in the street. Besides that they played loud and fast with little improvisation and had a strong political attitude in their songs.
