surf around here for awhile maybe:
http://www.garageband.com/ It's supposed to be "The web's largest independent music community and home to the definitive charts of the best emerging artists." |

Check out CD Baby (CDBaby.com) too. That is a great place to find great independent artists.
You'll also need to ask for permission from the astists, and record label if they are on one, before you broadcast them. If it's too much work going to each artist and label asking for permission you could secure a webcasting license from SoundExchange. ASCAP, BMI or SESAC webcast licenses may be needed too. You could also broadcast through one of several 3rd party licensing entities; Live365, LoudCity or SWCast. Since you're interested in unsigned artists, everyone you contact will probably be very happy you want to play them. So if you are willing to do some legwork you should be ok. Good luck! |

Look at this a ste says: "If an artist is 'unsigned', it means that they do not have a record contract. If they are performing any music composed by a member of PRS, then you are liable for PRS payments. While you'll spot a well-known cover version, you may not spot a band covering an album track, for example."

Unfortunately you will, as indicated above, need to work with each individual artist to get a signed release to play their music. While music organizations like BMI, ASCAP are great for blanket coverage for member artists, unsigned artists in many cases are not members of these organizations and therefore not covered. While many artists would be happy for you to play their music I can assure you that many will not be. We run an indie station (primarily windows media instead of shoutcast) and have a rather large filing cabinet filled with thousands of signed releases, one for each artist/album that we play. Many artists want to really control their music and would not be pleased to find you playing their music without their signed approval - and heaven help you if you allowed it to be downloaded from your site. We even detail which songs on their albums are theirs and free to play and those that contain samples, voice tracks or covers from other artists where they cannot sign for that use release. It can be done, but be prepared to put in a lot of grunt work to deal with thousands of individual artists instead of just a few music organizations. eoRadio http://www.eoRadio.com - Unsigned and limited release artists from around the globe. |
