Plagiarism? Petty versus RHCPs?
This one might go in breaking news, or music discussion, I dunno. But I heard this analysis and it's pretty convincing-- the Red Hot Chili Peppers almost certainly drew hard and long from Tom Petty's hit circa 1993. Listen for yourself.

play one note 'A' - how many bands, singers balh blah balh have played that note? Are they all copying? plagarising?
Play three A, D, E - in that order? I can take a truck load of tracks and find similarities across wide ranging genres.. Music plagarism is just bollox imo...

It's only those bits of the songs they're playing that sound similar. The rest of the song is totally different.

music is always going to contain plagurism because there are limitations on the amount of note combinations that sound good, so plagiriasm after time is gonig to be pretty commonplace

I steal beats and remix stuff on Sonic Foundry Acid Pro all the time, although I don't generally sell it. It's pretty easy to do if you have a day or two to learn the program.

OMFG:
Am, G, Dm Holy shit! JESUS. THAT'S ONLY BEEN USED IN ONE SONG, EVER! Oops, wait, the Tom Petty song is Am, G, D ... The "damning evidence" is not horribly weak (they do sound similar), but it's nowhere near "damning evidence". *tries to find the Mp3 that was really damning evidence of another song pair* Freedom of speech is the basic freedom of humanity. sampling is different.
but a chorus of "di da di" vs a chorus of "li da di" I'd say that's a rip off. |

Anthony Kiedis used to accuse Mike Patton of ripping him off, so I guess this is "what goes around".

Guitar rifts are just that, you'd probably find a lot of songs that use the same rifts, especially with blues. If you can copyright a rift, then we are doomed. Petty probably stole it from someone else.
