C++ Runtime Library error after upgrade

I've upgraded to the newest version of Winamp, and when I open the program the following error message comes up:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe

abnormal program termination

When I click the OK button on the error message, Winamp closes.

I realize that someone else has had this same issue:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....osoft+visual+c

I've tried to fix this by the methods mentioned in that post:
doing a clean install several times;
diabling Microsoft Machine Debug Manager;
and changing the Media Library view from the Now Playing page to Audio.

I don't have any WXMCE_WPA file, so I was unable to do a hijackthis Fix.
I do not have Spyware Doctor installed on this computer.
When I uninstalled v5.23 and reinstalled the older v5.2, no error message appeared upon opening Winamp.

Any help would be appreciated.

Other then what is already mentioned (the fix methods), there are at least two possible common factors you and timbo400 have.
  • ATI Radeon 9600 card
  • RealPlayer updater scheduler
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
Couple things to try
  • While Winamp is not running (rather unavoidable at this point) edit the Winamp.ini file from the Winamp folder. You can open Winamp.ini in a text editor like Notepad. Scroll down to or search for a line that starts with skin=. Delete the skin name to the right of the equal sign and save Winamp. That will make Winamp use Default Classic skin instead of the Modern skin. My suspicion is that there may be a compatibility issue between ATI 9600 and modern skins (only a guess).
  • No luck with that? Try disabling the RealPlayer update scheduler. Close RP's prefs and RealPlayer. Close Windows and reboot/restart the computer.

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

I've tried everything so far and the only fix that worked was using system restore to go back to v5.22. Everytime I try to upgrade to v.5.23 I get the same problem again.

Last night I finanally got sick of the whole mess and did a fresh re-install of windows (I was having some other problems and I wanted to repartition my hard drives) that solved the problem so it's definately a software bug, not hardware.

JonnyMac, I tried both of your suggestions and neither appeared to have any effect. Thanks anyway, though.

Anyone else have any other ideas about this issue?

At a guess, try disabling pmp_ipod.dll. That's the file that enables Ipod support in Winamp.
To disable, rename the file to eg. pmp_ipod.off while Winamp is closed. The file can be found in the Winamp plugins folder: C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins by default.
If no luck, also disable ml_pmp.dll (portable device support).
You may need to configure Windows to show file extensions.

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.

siebe83, that worked perfectly. I renamed pmp_ipod.dll to pmp_ipod.off and the error message doesn't come up anymore. I'm assuming though that I won't be able to connect my iPod to Winamp?

Yeah, by disabling pmp_ipod, iPod support is disabled.

Maybe it's a conflict with the iPod Service you have running:
O23 - Service: iPodService - Apple Computer, Inc. - C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe

Perhaps try disabling that service, and see if the error still occurs.
Though this is just a guess, seeing that timbo400 did not have that service running but did get the same (or a similar) crash.

If you really don't get it to work, you could check out ml_ipod instead, a different iPod support plugin: www.mlipod.com
Be sure you never run pmp_ipod and ml_ipod simultaneously.
(which probably means that you need to uncheck iPod support in the installer when you upgrade your Winamp)

If you're bored go here or, if the boredom is more serious, here.

I wasn't really sure how to disable IPodService.exe; I just removed it from Processes in the Windows Task Manager. I'm reluctant to delete it from the computer because it came with the iPod. I don't really know what it does; can my iPod connect to the computer without it?

In the meantime, I've just uninstalled the pmp_ipod plugin from Winamp. I will probably just install ml_ipod.

Thanks again for your help.

To disable IPodService, go to:

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

or: start > run > services.msc

Scroll down for iPodService
Right-click it, select 'Properties'
Click the 'Stop' button
Wait for Windows to stop the service.
Then change the StartUp Type drop-down menu from 'automatic' to 'manual'.
Click Apply/OK

nb. Fix these entries with HJT

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Admin Protocal] MSADMLN.exe

(in the HJT Scan results, checkmark those 2 entries ONLY, and click Fix Checked).

Reboot, then delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\MSADMLN.exe

It appears that disabling IPod Service doesn't get rid of the error message. For now, I'll just uninstall the pmp_ipod plugin and install ml_ipod.

Thanks again.

Hmmm, ok... maybe it's some kinda weird bug in pmp_ipod then.
Alas, I don't have an iPod to check/test with, heh.

out_raw.dll

On my machine: out_raw.dll plugin causes this error (this is after removing pmp_ipod), as it loads msvcr80.dll but doesn't have a manifest.

(I am currently trying to code a shell extension and this whole dll/managed/unmanaged/manifest/mfc/MS-CRAP/com/.NET/etc. is just getting on my nerves. Winamp is one of the two programs with this problem on my box, the other was the shell extension...)

Just though I'd comment.

FYI, xphoenix had a worm (see edit in my previous post above)

But yeah, buggy or no-longer-compatible 3rd-party plugins could also be possible for that (and many other) error messages / crashes.

Can we not have a tool to check if plugins are compatable!? I had "the brain" GPP cause the latest version (5.35) to crash with this error - shame really!
