forum software

First of all, hello, it's been a while.
I see the porn sites are keeping the moderators busy, and the iranian first attack wave is over.

Right, basically, as part of a pretty big project we're planning some forum software, we've thought through most of the generic features like private messages, profiles, posting options, etc and as many options for the user within them as possible. But the more ideas we have, the better we can make this. I know there's people here who do a fuckload of forum surfing, so what sort of things would you like to see, featurewise or any idea really? Things like for example member ratings instead of post counts to ascend ranks or a different post formatting process (vb code stuff). Pretty much any idea that isn't retarded will be put into it with an optional button next to it.

Moderators, what tools would you really like to have at your disposal that would make your jobs easier? I've never been a moderator at anywhere with some heavy traffic so i'm not sure how it is for you guys. Anything that you've wished you could see sometimes when an inconvenience has pissed you off.

the ban button is really useful, so we don't have to go into the admin control panel to get rid of someone.

a "watch this idiot" flag on each account(viewable to only moderators/admin), or a list of how many warnings a person has had would be good.

quick reply is something that we added to the forum which is useful.

in this forum we can see your postcounts in every post, so we don't have to visit your profile. Some people still post pump, this is the reason we made the uncounted recycle bin.

we added in some non standard vb tags for use in the forum FAQ's.

what software are you using?

Holy shit, it's Raz.
Some features I've seen on other forums and liked:
* Quote "buffer" - it allows you to easily quote multiple people without a lot of cutting / pasting
* An option for "threaded" threads (a la Slashdot)
* Quick reply is good
* "Quick link" is good
* Option to ignore the sigs of specific users. There have been a few sigs here that were annoying as hell, but all text so adblock is useless
* The ability to add an attachment when editing a post

mikm meant it would be cool to be able to add attachments when editing posts.
in my opinion we should be also able to edit attachments.

so i "fixed" to make it meet my opinion.

Did you understand that?

and btw: i am one of the least likely persons in this forums to consume drugs.

how about a way for the userbase as a whole to police the forums?
explanation :
basically something like a "vote to kick/ban" button, say a person needs to have it pressed for them, oh about 10? 20 times? for it to kick in, and even then only for a paltry timeset, say 2-3 days?
it could work... would all depend on the implementation though.
AIM uses a similar thing to great success E.G. the "warn this person" button, if a person gets enough warnings action is taken.

I hate everyone, so you don't have to.

Options that appear available currently are not. Fix these. E.G. "delete entire post" shouldn't be seen if we can't us it, or "edit" (should disappear after the allowed time has elapsed).

The ability to attach more than one file per post (still within the same overall file size limit) would be nice.

The ability to show a pic on your post when you attach it would be nice - would make it so users wouldn't have to use imageshack to make it viewable on the actual post, and it would last longer when we search for/read older threads.

I agree with the need for a way to show multiple quotes more easily.

Maybe some additional features could be added to the search feature to allow new members to find answers more easily. I can't think of any now, but maybe some of you might think of some good specific suggestions.

Maybe you might consider an auto-resize feature for pictures that are too big - something that fixes pics to fit the best width of the forum page or forces them into a thumbnail link if they're too big.

I'm not really begging for any of this, just throwing something in your pipe for you to smoke if you so choose.

Hmm, you must have been reading the vBulletin 3.6 changelog. all of that, exept the search idea, and the edit expire, are part of vBB 3.6

Signature time in = dead pagerank bots

Users don't get a signature until making a set number of posts.

(of course, this could already be done with user group policy)
