'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin killed

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5311298.stm
Quote:
Australian environmentalist and television personality Steve Irwin has died during a diving accident.

Mr Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb to the chest while he was filming an underwater documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from the nearby city of Cairns rushed to treat him at the scene but were unable to save him.

Mr Irwin was known for his television show The Crocodile Hunter and his work with native Australian wildlife.

Poor bugger, I'm sure if he had to go he'd have prefered something with a little more teeth than a stingray to get him, let's hope it was a really big one.

Top bloke, rainy sunday afternoon TV won't be the same without a bit of Crocodile Hunter....

I found out about this just thirty minutes after it happened.

I remember I used to obsessively watch his shows as a kid; it's almost like I knew him as a best friend. It's a damn shame he had to make his exit so soon.

RIP, my friend; you will be missed.

This is a sig of some nature.

His shows were the only wildlife documentaries I could really watch.

It's surreal how he died though.

At least he got killed doing what he loved rather than getting hit by a bus.

Crikey. Figured it was a matter of time though since he did nothing but live in the face of danger (literally).

Irony:

"Irwin was being filmed for his eight-year-old daughter Bindi's new TV show as he snorkelled in shallow water when a normally placid bull ray lashed out."

More ironic:

"Mr Stainton said he and Irwin were in north Queensland to film a new documentary called Ocean's Deadliest for American TV. "

I guess it doesn't have to penetrate the heart, but stings in the chest can be fatal with the toxin adding to the injury of a 10-12" long "fingernail" jabbing you with a whip of the tail.

Wacopedia said only 17 (including Irwin) have been known to die from ray attack.

I always thought he'd get eaten by a crocodile or stomped by a rhino. Who would figure on a ray?. He probably underestimated his peril too. After seeing him on TV, I could see him easily being a little careless. If you remember, back in January, he got bit really bad by a crocodile. It wasn't the first time.

Who would figure a ray would kill you?. You'd have a better chance getting struck by lightning.

He wasn't as careless as Timothy "Grizzly Man" Treadwell, who messed around with grizzly bears until they ate him.

i always thought it was funny that the toughest aussie i'd ever seen (irwin, duh ) was deathly afraid of birds, simply because their jaws can lop(sp?) off fingers quite easily.

but anyway, back in the day i watched TV, i used to love his show! R.I.P. steve irwin

I am not as adventurous as Irwin, but I can think of a few times nature has tried to kill me here in Oregon. And it's not what you expect. One time it was just because my car broke down and I didn't have enough clothes for a winter walk. Some more dramatic incidents too, but it doesn't take much.

Irwin was about 5 months older than me, and gee, I'm glad I'm not dead.....

Do a cool TV show. His old lady is from Eugene and seemed cool.... a couple kids.... then you end up offed.

That really sucks.

i never watched his show because I couldn't stand his accent.. haha

very unlucky for him indeed. usually they only sting if you really piss them off, like standing on them, or spearing them.

when i was young i used to swim with the rays, some of them swim upto you and want to be petted.(usually manta rays)

Perfect picture, Psythik.

Thanks for posting it.

I'm not suprised he died young considering his risk-taking lifestyle, but he was a good entertainer and educator.

CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin was videotaped pulling a poisonous stingray barb from his chest in his last moments of life, officials said Tuesday, as tributes poured in for TV’s “Crocodile Hunter.”

Police said there was nothing suspicious about Irwin’s death and no evidence he provoked the animal. Irwin, 44, was stabbed through the heart on Monday while snorkeling with a stingray during filming of a new TV program on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

John Stainton, Irwin’s manager who was among the crew on the reef, said the fatal blow was caught on videotape, and described viewing the footage as having the “terrible” experience of watching a friend die.
I wonder when the video will get leaked and hit ogrish/torrents/emule.

Dear Omnipotent Being:

I DEMAND AN EXPLANATION FOR THIS DECISION.

Off the top of my head, with little or no effort, is a list of celebrities who needed to die LONG before the Croc Hunter:

K-Fed, Geraldo Rivera, Al Roker, Rosie O'Donnell, Garth Brooks, Robin Williams, Burt Reynolds, John Tesh, Hootie and the Blowfish (mostly just Hootie), Ashton Kutcher, Barry Bonds, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Kelly Osbourne, Star Jones, Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise (I know I listed him twice, that's how much I despise him), Paris Hilton, Madonna, Each and Every Baldwin Brother, Sean Hannity, Russell Crowe, Dr. Phil, Dennis Miller, and Oprah.

For some reason, you chose to take the Crocodile Hunter from me, and leave me with all of the shit-heads above. Are you running some kind of "reverse evolution" program, where you try to keep crappy people alive for longer periods of time? Cracker, you must be out yo' mind.

Do you think I can get Barry Bonds to jump into a Croc pool to wrastle with an old mangy Croc who needs to be moved to another tank? Hell no.

Any chance that Star Jones will jump out of a moving speedboat in order to get enough speed and velocity to penetrate deep into a swamp, because that's where all the really big snakes are? Not a chance in hell (unless you told her there was Cheescake at the bottom.)

Do you know how lame it would sound if Dennis Miller were to come across a giant Black Momba? It would be like this: "Crikey! Now, I don't want to go off on a rant here, but this blighter of a Momba has more issues than the members of the Algonquin Roundtable." I shudder to even think about it.

I know we haven't really seen eye-to-eye on a lot of issues in the past, but you have got to admit you screwed the pooch on this one. So do me a favor and just randomly choose one of the useless bags of flesh from the list above, and drop a big anvil on them all "Road Runner style". We can then whip up some story about how the papers got it wrong, and Steve Irwin isn't dead, he was just REALLY tired after capturing a rabid howler monkey in the jungle of Mosambutu.

Do this one thing for me, and I will stop doing that thing that makes you so angry. Well, I won't "stop" doing it, but I will cut back on it. A little.

Sincerely,
The Angry Ferret.

Steve Irwin was at a job interview when he was asked if he liked any kid's TV shows. He said that he really liked Thunderbirds, but admitted that Stingray always had a place in his heart.

When my uncle heard this news story on the TV he said that it wouldn't be long until a joke was made. Low and behold, literally one hour later, my aunt got a text with one.

Irwin was awesome.

Wow, I was watching "The Dead Pool" last night. I think I could go with most of your list, except Robin Williams. Frankly, I'm a little puzzled, the rest of these people are really a nuisance. What did Williams do?. And really, why does everyone want to pick on Barry Bonds?.

For the rest, we could arrange a bus crash without shedding a tear. I think you could add everyone named Clinton, just to make sure we didn't miss any.

If you haven't caught it, "The house of D" was a pretty good movie. Not a really "feel good movie", but a good Robin Williams film.

Surprisingly, I saw a Tom Cruise movie that didn't make me want to choke him. That's "Collateral".
