WARNING: Quicktime

WARNING!!!

NEVER install anything that has to do with QUICKTIME.

After too many hours of frustration I was still not able to repair the mess that QT created. What is this piece of SHIT?

I WARN EVERYBODY: NEVER install QuickTime on your computer OR you will get into big trouble. And most daring, the unistall is a tragedy and the only way to get everything back is to reinstall the whole system.

Why the F*CK does it integrate into the OS? And why does it make system-wide configuration changes WITHOUT asking the permission to do that? (or even notifying me that it will do so?)

There is but nothing out there where you need QT, and if you are really one of the lost souls that need QT than you have my empathy. And God bless you, you will really need divine powers to correct everything.

Well, I SHOULD have tried that one first, but somehow I got tempted to try QT out. That was a BIG mistake.

I mean it screwed up my whole system. And it killed the way SeaMonkey handled the various files (NOT only .mov, but everything beginning with mp3 and ending with other movie formats). THAT IS A BUG!!! And there are plenty of registry entries, almost everything is f*cked up. I really haven't expected that sort of shit. (I have found some 20 registry entries. Can I simply delete them? The problem is, as I unistalled something, or tried to delete something else, a lot of things would crush and break, and lots of programs want QT back to play the various file formats - although before installing QT they played those formats perfectly even without QT)

I deleted the SeaMonkey plugin (it even crashed my Seamonkey while I tried to uninstall it). And somehow, SeaMonkey does not handle RealAudio files anymore (I did NOT use the official plugin either; I believe QT screwed even this up), and some other movie types, too. Probably I need to reinstall a lot of stuff to correct this. It simply pisses me off.

No, it's not. It's an annoying feature though. You can repair the associations using the preferences though (at least you can in Firefox, there'll be a way to do it in the monkey).

An interesting thing is that installing Windows Media Player for Macintosh on OS X was a similarly painful affair. It's kinda weird that Microsoft and Apple have such trouble integrating with each other's systems. Microsoft have gone down the sensible route of just endorsing a Windows Media plugin for Quicktime on Mac now, which obviously fits in better on there. It'd be nice if Apple followed suit with a set of Directshow Quicktime filters but I just don't see it happening any time soon.

I've never had a problem with QT on my PC, in fact I prefer that format (on the web) to crap like real and windows media.

for the web, video embedded into flash is the best solution though.

I have problems with Flash because it doesn't work very well with 5.1 sound. It just plays in the front two channels (whereas most stereo sound gets panned to all the channels).

Why?

I've never had a problem with video embedded into flash, whereas with WMP, quicktime and real embedded in a webpage it is very sketchy and often times doesn't like to play or even show up, depending on the site. I can't speak to the 5.1 surround issue since I don't have surround sound, but that seems pretty minor of a problem.

another thing I hate about WMP and Real, that quicktime doesn't have a problem with, is letting the entire video load before I watch it. with WMP I HAVE to rely on whatever buffer it decides is enough (which is never ever enough) and the video ends up sticking part way through and more than half the time the buffer never ramps up.

with quicktime (and most flash video (read youtube)) I can hit play and then hit pause and then go read some other webpages while the whole thing loads and then watch the video all the way through with no interruptions.

I thought you could pause and let the entire video load for WMP, too?

not in my experiences, maybe it depends on what kind of file WMP is playing?

@zoot:
Already have it. It works sometimes, depending on the site, type of video, etc.

Cool. Thought it was a bit weird that you didn't seem to have it!

The max you can manually set 'windows media source filter' to is 30 seconds.

But screw that.. download the video first then watch it. I hate media embeded in webpages, I disabled all those annoying plugins. If I can't download it (very few and far between), I don't want to see it.

Quicktime blows monkey balls. It's easier to download the QT file and convert it to something else than to get that bullshit program out of your computer.
