how to completely reset an ipod

does anyone know how i can completely reset an ipod (nano w/v1.0 firmware in this case)? this means erase everything (i already know about the 'hold-on -> hold-off -> menu+select' reset routine which doesn't erase anything).

i did use the ml_ipod 'format' command. i don't know what exectly the format command did but it didn't erase the ipod.

fyi abu, one thing the format command *did* do was to leave my ipod nano in such a state that it would no longer be detected when i plugged it into a usb port (attempted on two different functioning windows xp systems). in order to correct this i issued the above 'hold-on -> hold-off -> menu+select' reset routine. is this expected behavior after a 'format'? if it is please add a note to the format routine to inform the user what needs to be done afterward.

Use the iPod updater (from Apple).

But your experience is strange, formatting always worked for me.
