Dollar store toothpaste
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government warned consumers on Friday to avoid using toothpaste made in China because it may contain a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze.
Out of caution, the Food and Drug Administration said, people should throw away toothpaste with labeling that says it was made in China. The FDA is concerned that these products may contain diethylene glycol. The agency is not aware of any poisoning from toothpaste in the United States, but it did find the antifreeze ingredient in a shipment at the U.S. border and at two retail stores: a Dollar Plus store in Miami and a Todo A Peso store in Puerto Rico. Officials said they are primarily concerned about toothpaste sold at bargain retail outlets. The ingredient in question, called DEG, is used as a lower-cost sweetener and thickening agent. The highest concentration of the chemical found in toothpaste so far was between 3 percent and 4 percent of the product's overall weight. http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/06/01....ap/index.html This probably wouldn't kill you, but it couldn't be good for you. It usually takes a couple of cups to kill a cat, or a gallon to kill a dog, but don't leave any anti-freeze around, because it is sweet and animals will drink it up. If they survive they usually end up blind. And boy it's not a nice death. Using it for artificial sweetener in toothpaste? I guess only in China .

I always drain my antifreeze right there on the ground.
Hmmm, I wonder what happened to all my neighbors' pets? ![]() Anyone who would go cheap on toothpaste deserves a stomach that won't boil over or freeze. |

When this happened with cat food, it took about 6 weeks to reveal that bargain brand and name brand all came out of the same vat.

There have been scandals involving DEG in Europe over the years. The major one was about 20 years ago and virtually wiped out the Austrian wine industry. UJ |

It's beginning, just as I said. Now instead of affecting only the poor it's affecting 'tards, loonies, prisoners, juvies & the sickly... nothing for good upright citizens to be concerned about, yet. *this is an irony tag* |

This actually seems to be a real concern lately, not just tooth paste but pet food and our food as well. Maybe we need to stop importing food at all into the usa.

I just bought some ethernet cables at a dollar store, and they work just as good as any ethernet cable I've ever used. I bought seven of em, for what they were charging at Target for one. They're only six feet long, but that suits me just fine, I got enough loose wire lying around in here.
