Winamp 5.5 Lite questions...

2) Does the Lite version support Creative Zen players? As in transfer songs and all?

Yes, except for the Sonic extraction engine which has to be registered with Windows to be used and possibly WM-DRM as the file could be licensed for only one PC. Playlists and the Library may also not work if the drive letter of your music also changes.

Also, why can't you try it yourself?

Well, for one, I don't have my USB stick right now, only my mom's. Some important files are there, wouldn't want to do something I'd regret.

Sonic Extraction Engine would still have to register with an older version. And your library still needs to stay under the same drive letter otherwise your library and playlist will be screwed up.

Uncheck "Sonic Ripping/Burning Engine" and Gracenote "CDDB for recognizing CD's" in the Installer Options.

You'd probably also need to uncheck any other Gracenote features, such as Playlist Generator and Auto-Tagger (under the Media Library section), because installing any of those will register Gracenote DLL's into the registry.

Uncheck any other features/plugins you don't require.

Uncheck everything on the "Get the Most Out of Winamp" page
(Winamp Remote, Winamp Toolbar, Emusic Offer)

When the first part of the installer gets to the "Installation Complete" page, uncheck "Launch Winamp when the installer closes", then click Finish.

This will prevent Setup (followed by Winamp itself) from running.

Then go to the Winamp folder on your usb drive and do the following:

1) Delete paths.ini

This will prevent Winamp from trying to save settings in the %AppData%\Winamp folder, so it will save settings to the USB drive (installation dir) instead.


2) Open winamp.ini in Notepad

Change these lines in the [WinampReg] section:

From: NeedReg=1
To: NeedReg=0

From: IsFirstInst=1
To: IsFirstInst=0


Edit the following line in the [Winamp] section

From: no_registry=0
To: no_registry=1

This will prevent Winamp from ever trying to write to the Windows Registry.

Save winamp.ini


And you should be all set to go :-)

Yeah, heh, and that's another issue...

If the music files are also on the usb drive then there won't be a problem importing them into the library. Otherwise I wouldn't bother, unless you've also got a large external usb hard drive that you can carry around with you, where the music files will always be on the same drive.

You could even set some files to read-only, so they can't ever be written to.

eg. winamp.m3u8 & winamp.m3u

If the playlist is empty when you close Winamp, and you then set those two files to read-only, then the playlist will always be empty when you restart Winamp.

However, I don't recommend setting any files in the winamp\plugins\ml folder (media library database) to read-only, because then Winamp might spew when trying to write to/save the database - so, unless you meet the aforementioned specifications where the location of your music files are concerned, then it's best that you just don't add any files to the library's local media database.

That registry entry is specific to Winamp. 3rd-party authored plugins may or may not write to the registry. It's entirely up to the author of said plugins to code their plugins to do so (or not). In the case of Audioscrobbler (which I do not use), you should ask this question of the plugin author/developer.

Well the reference to Creative's Zen just through my head into a tailspin. It's been a while since I played with that brick. It did make a great USB drive, in it's own right.

Good stuff..
