Winamp won't recognize my Zen

I am running Windows 2000 SP4 and have installed Winamp V5.51 (Full).

My iPod Nano (3G) is recognized and works fine. My Creative Zen (8GB) is not recognized at all. I can use it with WMP 9 but would rather use one program for both players.

I don't see any options for enabling Play For Sure when installing.

Thanks for any help.

If you have the full installer then the p4s plugin is listed under Winamp Library -> Portable Media Player Support. Run the installer again and make sure you select it.

I have tried that and it still is not recognized.

Could it have something to do with Windows 2000? I had to use a 3rd party driver to be able to use the Zen with WMP 9 and Windows 2000. The system req. for the Zen says XP OS.

I think you need some specific (or later) version of WMP for MTP support. I thought v9 was fine. Do your portables make any mention of a version of WMP required?

Can you also post a list of plugins and system specs as detailed in the link below. These might help us to see what the problem is.

Installation of what?
Do you have a step-by-step procedure for installation of the correct software components?

I've been struggling with this issue for awhile now...

Thanks-Dan

Winamp probably. I would guess that he didn't install the pmp_p4s plugin and then posted before even looking at my first post here. If you do have the pmp_p4s plugin installed then read my first post to know what we need to help you.

At this point, I have reinstalled 5.52 on this system (2000 Professional SP4), ensuring that the p4s option was checked. Connecting the Zen Microphoto, I see the device appear under the "Windows Portable Devices" group in the device manager. WMP9 sees the device. Winamp 5.52 does not.

I appreciate any help in making this work.

Thanks-Dan

Sorry - I needed to see your second post in this thread for the requirements link.

-PC or Motherboard make/model - Asus/ VIA chipset
-CPU & RAM - Athlon 64 3200 2G
-Sound card or chip - ADI Soundmax
-Videocard - GeForce 2
-Windows OS (including Service Pack, eg. WinXP sp2) - 2000 Professional sp4
-DirectX version (start > run > dxdiag) - 7.0
-Winamp version - 5.52
-Confirmation of the Winamp installation type (Pro, Full, Bundle, Lite) - Full
-A List of Plugins (see below for full details) <-- this is the most important log! (see attachment)

A cursory glance at the listed plugins revealed no p4s plugin, although I may have missed it.

Thanks-Dan

My apologies, that should have been second post and not first. and your plugin list reveals all.

Nullsoft Creative NJB Plug-in v0.54 [pmp_njb.dll]
Nullsoft USB Device Plug-in v0.6 [pmp_usb.dll]
Run the installer again and make sure you check "Support for Microsoft's PlaysForSure". It's listed under Winamp Library -> Portable Media Player Support.

Thanks for the quick response.

I did the install again, making sure that the playsforsure option was checked. I still do not see this plugin in the list. Is there a log that would indicate the failure of a plugin load? I see the same three plugins seen previously:

<< Portable Media Player plugins >>

Nullsoft iPod Plug-in v0.71 [pmp_ipod.dll]
Nullsoft Creative NJB Plug-in v0.54 [pmp_njb.dll]
Nullsoft USB Device Plug-in v0.6 [pmp_usb.dll]

While I see C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\pmp_p4s.dll, it isn't loading for some reason. No error messages are visible (it doesn't mean that there are none; I'm just not seeing any.)

Would the old Directx version have anything to do with this?

Thanks-Dan

I assume that pmp_p4s isn't listed in Prefs -> Plug-ins -> Portables either then. I cannot explain why it isn't being loaded, it should be. Are you certain that the plugin's name is pmp_p4s.dll and not pmp_p4s.dll.off or something to that effect? Renaming a plugin to prevent it loading is sometimes recommended in an attempt to solve a problem.

The only error catcher I know of is the Error Reporter that comes with beta versions but that will only work if Winamp crashes.

Also, I don't see why DirectX should matter. You could try upgrading it if you like. Otherwise you will have to wait for someone else to comment if they have some ideas as I don't have any more.

As this situation is occurring on my office machine and I'm currently at home, I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I can attempt further experimentation. The file name for the plugin (C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\pmp_p4s.dll) has not been changed.

I've never had much luck getting the Zen Microphoto to work on any OS before XP, even after Microsoft came out with the MPD driver for 98Se and 2K. I would suspect the PlaysForSure stuff is at the bottom of it. I'd be happy if I could avoid the DRM issue altogether, as I don't purchase music offline.

Thank you for your attention to this-- Dan

I reinstalled 5.52, deleting iPod support (as I don't have one). I still don't see pmp_p4s.dll being loaded. Examination of system logs yields no information. C:\Program Files\Winamp\install.ini indicates that it should be installed

  • Is there a debug switch/startup log generator option available in Winamp, such as a command line switch?
  • Are there things I need to look at that should exist in the Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\winamp directory?

Thanks- Dan

No. I use an XP system to manage the Zen, avoiding connection to the Win2K system. I still suspect I'm doing something wrong. As I lack time to investigate it further, I'm living with the status quo.
