Winamp 5.54 uses 100-145 MB of RAM

I don't know if this is a bug or just me.
The previous version of Winamp 5.53 used 10-30MB of RAM However 5.54 is using at least 100MB and goes as high as 145MB. Especially when I open the Media Library.
I installed it with its default settings.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, and I have 512MB of RAM, AMD XP processor.

i'm guessing you have a bad plugin from a previous installation.

see the faq about this problem. a clean install might be the best solution.

Have the same problem, but my winamp is using 330 Mb running on Vista Ult. x86 2Gb.

Tried "clean install" as Rocker recommended but it didn't solve the problem

I have already tried a clean install, I even reinstalled it in a new directory. And the it took 110 MB as soon as I ran the program.

Mine used to only use like 20 mb and less minimized but now it uses like 60 with the .54 update. There is definitely a problem here. I am using vista x64.

It doesn't seem to trim memory usage when minimized at all anymore like it used to.

I just did a clean install to rule out plugins ect.. and it still sits there using at least 51 mb of ram minimized, I even chose not to install all the shoutcast/online/video stuff this time that I don't use anyway. 5.53 used MUCH less ram, is there anyway to fix this?

Its intresting that the range of memory you are all using is so drasically different. I don't know why mine is so high 100MB-140MB, and I didn't install with any extras either

I had this same problem but have just spent this morning working on it and it seems to be fixed now. I'll go through what I did in case it helps someone here.

Originally I had 5.53 using ~20M upgraded to 5.54 beta and it used >100M but I thought it was just a beta issue. Upgraded to full version today and it used ~120M when playing audio.

So, first I tried a clean install my way - uninstalled, deleted left-over files in Program Files/Winamp, and deleted the Nullsoft folder from the registry.

Reinstalled - no change.

Then I did a reinstall following these instructions:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#clean
except I again deleted the registry entry as had already done this before reading the advise not to. This time after running the uninstaller there was no files left to manually delete.
I couldn't find any enty in any of my Application Data folders, but when I looked in C:\Windows I didn't find a "Winamp.ini" but I did find a "WINAMP.EXE-0D0189CA.pf" so I deleted this file. I then rebooted my PC.

Ok, this is where my memory gets hazy as what I was doing didn't seem important at the time....

After reboot, I reinstalled as normal. After opening winamp and scanning my library either there was no change or the memory usage was down to ~60M (I can't remember which).

I noticed that when you shut down winamp, the exe still runs, so I played around with ending the process and/or the agent (winampa.exe) process before restarting the programme.
I also experimanted with restarting from the Start menu rather than the quick launch shortcut.

Anyway I eventually had it to a stage where it was using ~60M but had idling CPU usage (even when not playing a file) of between 1 and 4%.

Then I rebooted my PC again and to cut this a little short (played around with the above ideas)it seems to be somewaht fixed (memory of ~20M and no CPU usage when minimised).

I mean somewhat in that it acts a little strangely.

Playing a file in fullscreen now gives ~40-65M usage (Media library tab). If I minimise it it's down to ~13M, if I was on the visualisation tab previously (higher CPU usage) and minimise it I get slightly higher memory usage and CPU usage with spikes of up to 35%). I guess the visualisation is still runnning in some sense then.

If I start in fullscreen mode (no visualisation) and go to windowshade mode the memory usage only drops slightly (30-40M). But if I then minimse it and re-open it into windowshade mode the memory usage goes down to ~15M.

So it seems to depend on the order you do things in...???

I'm using XP SP3, AMD X2 processor, 2GB RAM.

Good luck getting yours fixed!

EDIT: What's with that "URL submitted by user" yoke? How do you post URLs so that people can see them/open them???

I'm running vista home premium x 64, x2 5000+ with 4 gb of memory so I guess it doesn't matter much to me, but now I'm more curious. This small incremental update doubled my memory usage which is very strange. The cpu usage was also spiking but I managed to fix that with the clean install. What the hell could they ahve changed to cause this? Mine used to trim the memory down to like under 10 mb minimized ut now it doesn't change at all.

And I thought WMP was a memory hog. I'm getting a CPU usage reading of ~80mb (~60 in windowshade mode) compared to ~20 on WMP.

seems a lot of people are having this problem then. 5.53 uses less than half the memory 5.54 is using.

Same here.
Clean install, no active playlist, no video support, no online services etc...
5.54 uses over 70 mb memory, compared to 5.53 which had all of the above and still used half of that at most.

Just upgraded my Vista laptop to 5.541 and this issue has reappeared. It won't go below 70MB even when minimised, tried everything I did to fix it before with no luck.

It's not a problem on my XP PC though.

Luckily I don't often play music off my laptop so it's no big deal for the moment.
