Use a NAT router, and if using wireless turn on WPA/WPA2 with a strong passphrase or randomly generated password.
Keep your OS and software patched.
View email in plain text and don't open email attachments.
Turn off browser scripting by default.
Don't install software from untrusted sources.

That'll cover you 99.5% of the time.

I have a direct connection to the internet. I stopped using a router because it kept slowing down my bandwidth for God knowy why.

The only protection I use are Windows Defender and Windows Firewall, both which came with Vista.

So why the hell don't I get any viruses, malware, spyware, ever? But yet I have to, on almost a weekly basis, clean out the PCs of all my relatives, all of which I've made sure I've locked down pretty tightly.

What am I doing right?
