Not all "current listeners" are displayed in "Shoutcast Directory"?
Hi guys, searched your forum, but did not find an exact answer.
I’m trying to resolve an issue here and already has contacted my streaming host provider, but they said that they have no control over my problem. That is way I am contacting you. Below is my conversation with their support engineer and a problem description… Could you please read through and see if his statements are correct because I think that something is not right here… “Support: what is the issue? Alex: I noticed that our Shoutcast "current listeners" value stats displayed incorrectly in directory listings... Alex: Example: When your control panel is displaying 40 of 50 listeners, Shoutcast directory only displays 13 http://www.shoutcast.com/directory/s...e&s=novoeradio Later, I found the DNAS page and it said that 13 is the number of our unique listeners only. http://s5.viastreaming.net:7020/ So, why are the rest of our listeners are not displayed in Shoutcast directory? Based on that - the problem statement is: SHOUTCAST DIRECTORY PAGE ONLY DISPLAYS THE NUMBER OF UNIQUE LISTENERS AND NOT TOTAL LISTENERS. Alex: Since I have no control of that - most likely that it is a mis-configuration on your side between the Shoutcast server and Shoutcast directory service. Support: its not Support: thats shoutcast standard of the yp Support: directory listing Support: bot Support: it always will take number of unique listeners Alex: So it ONLY displays UNIQUE LISTENERS? Support: and it will not always work, its not us thats doing it. it's their bot Support: usuallay isnt exactly accurate but good general area of stations unique listeners Alex: Ok. Let me ask Shoutcast support if they can check it" Will really appreciate if anyone has a clear answer as to how it is supposed to work... Best Regards, Alex P. SHOUTcast yp only diisplays your current unique listeners.
if a person tunes in twice at the same time you may have 2 listenrs but because you are serving 2 streams to the same ip you have only 1 unique listener. secondly the SHOUTcast yp does not display realtime stats so if your dnas page says you have 23 but the last time the yp touched you had 13 then 13 is what displays. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish. ![]()

Thanks for your reply.
Do you guys have any plans to make it a more "real-time" and "total-listeners" like in the near future or is it too complicated? |

with the vast amounts of people using the yp it would be impossible for the database to work in realtime.
as for total listeners only unique listeners will ever be listed. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish. ![]()

There's something else working against you here.
Last time I checked, which was a few years ago, ViaStreaming offered Port 80 Proxy for Shoutcast servers. That's fine - many hosts do that - but it also means that anyone tuning in using the Port 80 "translation" of your shoutcast stream will appear, to the shoutcast server, to all be coming from ONE IP address. If that's the case, this is the reason the Shoutcast server sees fewer unique listeners than total listeners. It's set up that way to prevent people from "gaming" the system and trying to appear to have more listeners than they really do. The downside is that those providers using Proxy servers to offer port 80 streaming will make a server appear to have fewer listeners than they actually do. Solution? Ask for true Port 80 streaming from the provider, or find another one who can offer you that option. |
