Max listeners in Shoutcast Beta
Why are Max listeners not shown on the Shoutcast Beta site? Old Shoutcast 1.0 showed both the number of listeners and the maximum listener slots available. I could not find this answer searching the forums.

I think because nowerdays the radio stations have enough slots to host all the listeners. Back in 1999 to 2004 many radio stations just got a few slots for their listeners and not everybody was able to tune in.
Or you have more space for other important things, but I cant say this, cause its used for the ads

Space advertisers... I guess it pays the bills. The 1.0 version shows Max which indicates that the webcaster is dreaming, 1 listener, 1000 max. Or a realist, 1 listener, 20 max. For those accepting donations, why would someone want to donate to a station paying for 1000 listener slots, but may only peak at 10 listeners?

good question
![]() And a question that can often lead some broadcasters to fake listener counts. I'm not here right now - leave a msg after the beep... |

Faking listener counts
Speaking of faking listener counts, I believe some stations allow unlimited listening time. Meaning that someone could listen 24/7 just by leaving their computer on. This artificially inflates listener numbers, such that maybe only 1/2 of the listener count for just such a station on Shoutcast includes those actually listening. I wonder how many stations have something like a 4 hour time limit, meaning that listeners get kicked off after 4 hours, but can log back on immediately? This would give a much more accurate picture of actual listeners.

Why should radios kick their listeners? If you are working in an office for lets say 9 hours with a break and you and your colleagues are listening to a radio station, why should you kick them after 4 hours? Thats not good for your radio station, trust me

Maybe 9 hours is a better amount of time. The point is, why should listener counts be artificially inflated by allow 24/7 listening when no one is actually listening overnight? Maybe makes sense to show advertisers larger numbers. But you have to pay for additional listener slots to cover those who may not be listening. If the amount of listening time is limited, any listener who is kicked off after 4 or even 9 hours can log back in immediately
