Media Library & removable media

I have a lot of music files ( > 115 days )on my USB hard drive and occasionally need to copy some files to DVD so I can free up space on the hard drive. The problem is that after the files are removed from the hard drive, they disappear from the Media Library.
Is there a way to have the Media Library keep track of files on removable media, keeping in mind that those files may or may not be visible when the Library is updated.
I think that would be a very useful feature.

Thanks,
Don Johnson

Please explain how the library could keep track of something that isn't there?

I would like to see such a feature, too.
For example I am using an external HDD to save most of my music instead of copying all to my "small" notebok's hdd.

At first I thinka about checking if the path exists:
This means I attach my external HDD (drive letter U and add a subdir ( U:\music ) to winamp watch list.
Now if the hdd is not connected to the system, the path U:\music does not exists and it's files/entries in library should be ignored by winamp.

Furthermore winamp could create a hash value for the media to make sure that it only updates the library with the current media, if it is really the one which is intended to be watched.
