Strange Illegal Shutdown with 5.622 Media Library

I have a really strange problem with Winamp lately. It actually started in 5.621, but I downloaded the most recent version and the problem remains. I checked the forums, but I didn't see something similar. I apologize if it was already posted.

Basically, about 99% of the time when I right-click to edit the track info for a CD in the media library, Winamp causes a fatal error and shuts down. Very strange. It's possible to pull the tracks over to the Playlist Editor and right-click there - no problems when I do that. But for some reason I can't use the right click in the Media Library.

Sometimes also left-clicking will cause a problem, and as mentioned above there's about a 1% chance that right-clicking will be fine, but if I close the dialogs and re-right-click, then Winamp shuts down again.

Very annoying, as I have a large pile of CDs to rip.

There's a chance it could be a plugin or somesuch, but I really have no idea.

Thanks for any help provided.
Donovan

It's still happening. Any help??

I removed the Nosefart plugins (I somehow had two in the folder), and fatal errors are much less, but it's still happening...

Any suggestions? Anyone?

Similar Problem

I'm having the same problem on two Windows XP machines, when I right click on an album I get a crash.

I'm going to go through removing plugins until I can find which one causes it and report back.

the most obvious thing is that you've got old versions of all of my plug-ins present in your install (almost like you've installed an Essentials Pack from a few versions back).

i've listed what you'd need to upgrade either directly (if still wanted) or you could just run the Essentials Pack installer for 5.622 and install the update JTFE version.

Album Art v0.7 [gen_classicart.dll] -> now at 0.85 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/gen_classicart/index.html
Find File On Disk v3.0.2 [gen_find_on_disk.dll] -> now at 3.0.3 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/ffod.html
Jump To File Extra v1.2.4 (Build 1159) [gen_jumpex.dll] -> now at 1.2.5 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/jtfe.html
Lite'n Winamp Preferences v1.6.1 [gen_nopro.dll] -> now at 1.7 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/lite-n.html
One for Nunz v4.3.1 [gen_nunzio.dll] -> now at 5.11 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/14nunz.html
Playlist Undo v1.0.2 [gen_undo.dll] -> now at 1.1 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/plu.html
Skin Manager v1.0 [gen_skinmanager.dll] -> now at 1.0.1 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/sm.html
Time Restore & AutoPlay v2.5.2 [gen_timerestore.dll] -> now at 2.5.3 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/timerestore.html
ML Enqueue and Play v2.0 [ml_enqplay.dll] -> now at 2.0.1 http://nunzioweb.com/daz/mlenqplay.html

i wouldn't be surprised then if it's something to do with the gracenote libraries. might be best to try a clean re-install as per http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#clean (obviously backing up any settings as needed such as with http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=317153) and see if that makes any difference.

had to suggest updating the plug-ins first since i know they work with 5.622.

I understand about the plugins, no worries.

Well, now I've done a clean install and everything and it still does it.

Any other suggestions?

In the interest of complete thoroughness, it sometimes shuts down as well from clicking on the rip button in the media library. I left-click there and it illegally shuts down, or I left-click on CD tracks in the media library and the same thing happens.

And to reiterate, it doesn't happen all the time, but definitely the majority of the time. Sometimes the right-click on the file works and the rip button causes the problem...

If I close other programs like Firefox or what have you it seems less frequent, but doesn't stop altogether. I have a decent amount of RAM too, so I don't see that causing it.

Definitely a head-scratcher.

Ok, I've tracked down what I believe to the the culprit:

ML Enqueue and Play v2.0.1

As soon as I removed this, Winamp started working properly without crashing.

I then re-installed everything I'd removed. Still working fine. Then reinstalled ML Enqueue and Play. Starts to crash again.

So this seems to be the culprit.

@Sl1pStream: Can you try removing enqueue and play and see if that fixes the problem for you?

I can confirm this indeed stopped the problem.

Thanks, muppet!

@Sl1pStream: Great!

@DrO: Is there anything I can do to help you track down what's causing ML Enqueue and Play to pop its clogs?

oh well, trust it to be my code causing an issue, heh.

can you confirm where / what exactly is being clicked in the lead up to the crash (if possible a screenshot of the library view will be easier for me since if it's on the CD view, then that has a number of possible view states).

Yes you and your dodgy, unable-to-live-without-them plugins!

I'll take some screenshots etc later and post them up to help you understand.

Cheers, muppet.

and there i was blaming gracenote, whoops. hopefully that'll be a simple thing to fix, as enqplay is probably next in line for me to work on anyway as time allows (want to add in an add to queue to the options it otherwise adds).

Screenshots proved to be too hard, when I'd right click the key combo I pressed for "screenshot" would make the menu go away. So I
took a video instead, it's xvid encoded.

Testing shows (as does the video) that it all seems to work OK if I'm not playing music. As soon as I start a tune though, boom, over she goes.

You can't see the right click obviously just before the crash, but that's what I do on the "An Banquet in Blues" album.

Does this help? If not let me know what else you need. I could even setup VNC if you thought that would be beneficial in you finding the problem.

Cheers,
Tim

Regarding the above post, I would like to state for the record that it still happened to me when I wasn't playing music.

pm sent with a link to a test build to both of you to try out. though i'm going to have to do some more work on the plug-in but would be good to know if that resolves the issue (appears to be down to how i was working on the menu item string which behaves slightly differently on XP vs Win7).

Hi DrO!

This does indeed appear to fix the problem. I'll also test on my XP Machine at work when I get there (currently it's 6:20am in New Zealand) so give me another ~2-3 hours. But certainly trying for 10 minutes here to make Winamp Crash I can't anymore.

Regards,
Tim

that's good and Sl1pStream has confirmed the test build works ok as well. just now leaves me to fix up the accelerator item text not being changed correctly and adding in the add to queue feature people have been requesting.

thanks for testing and pin-pointing the problem plug-in

hello,

i had the same problem, for the same reason. it was solved after uninstalling the ml enqueue and play that came with the essentials pack. i downloaded a new ml enqueue and play from nunzioweb, and the problem returned instantly. is there a fix for this plugin or not?

cheers.

not currently as i just haven't had the time to finish a new ml_enqplay release especially now i've had to put a halt on my plug-in development. all i can say for the moment is you'll have to live without the plug-in until / when i officially provide an update (since it's done in my freetime and i tend to spend what freetime i do have not doing coding).

v2.0.2 (or anything newer than that) from here should resolve that crashing issue now.
