Winamp all of a sudden stopped working

I've had Winamp for a while now, and it's been really great.

But today, all of a sudden it stopped working.

When I open it, it won't open anymore and says this when I try to open it:

"Winamp has stopped working" and then "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I didn't do any updates or anything in the last while, and I was using it just fine yesterday. It was when I tried to open it today that it started saying that. Again, I didn't do any changes to my computer or anything. I didn't install any plugins or anything either.

I also tried uninstalling it and re-installing it and it did the same thing.

I have Windows 7 64-bit . Help?

Me too and it is driving me crazy happens at gigs - wish someone could come up with an answer and solution to this problem. Also using Windows 7 64 bit. Also pauses in the middle of songs at times. This really confuses the dancers.

Hi glaringdream and Galway girl,

Please read the 2nd sticky (the part about "Info Required When Posting") at the top of the forum page. No one can help with a problem like this without the appropriate details (it just becomes a guessing game, wasting everyone's time).

I am using Winamp latest version to my knowledge 5.623 with Windows 7 64bit and an a Roland Audio device attached to my laptop and M-Audio 610 on my desktop with professional speakers. Using the Classic skin and the lyric plug in "Winamp Lyrics (Explorer Version) v.122 (gen.lyrics-ie.dll). I have been using this configuration with an XP computer without problems for over 12 months - and without the lyrics plug in for many years and have never had a problem before. Hope this is sufficient information. Thanks but help!

Hi Galway girl,

You still have not provided the info requested (especially the One for Nunz report of your installation), but you have made a start.

I suggest you move the lyrics plug-in (gen.lyrics-ie.dll) out of the Winamp/Plugins folder to some other location and see if Winamp works. That plug-in (from 2001) is probably not compatible with Windows 7. If it is that plug-in that's causing your problem, you will need to get a compatible update from the person who made the plug-in or look for an alternative if you still need what that plug-in provides.

If it is not that plug-in causing the problem, please provide the One for Nunz report.

"In most if not all cases, also providing a list of all plugins installed can help us to diagnose many problems.
You can use DrO's One for Nunz plugin (gen_nunzio.dll) to produce a list of all (1st & 3rd party) plugins installed.
Install the plugin, open Winamp,
Go to: Prefs (Ctrl+P) > Plugins > General Purpose > One For Nunz > Config,
Checkmark "Open text file once generated",
Click "Config" again,
Then click: "Generate all listings (as below)"
When Notepad opens, save the file (via: File menu -> Save As) and attach my_plugin_list.txt in the zip along with your HijackThis and dxdiag logs (if required)."

Thanks. I have downloaded the numzioweb program and created a list but I haven't removed the lyrics plug in yet. I will give it a try - however without a lyrics plug in Winamp will not provide the functionality I need. Are you aware of any other lyrics plug ins for Winamp that may be compatible with win 7 64 bit. I tried Zingamp which used to work with previous versions of winamp -but no more. Will try removing the lyric plug in anyway to see if there is a problem -and let you know result.

There seems to be a lack of Win 7 compatible lyrics plug-ins. Metrolyrics is unreliable due to the number of users (check link below). You may need to go back to Win XP (use what was working), until things improve.

i know that http://www.lyricsplugin.com/ works as we got that fixed up a year or so back.

the metrolyrics issue is down to issues with their hosting and is not directly down to Winamp - the online view just loads what was provided by the service owner and is hosted externally of things. yes some would say that's a cop-out but that's how it goes with those online services.

making people revert an OS to XP just for a lyrics plug-in is just insane and that really is a poor piece of advise.

Why is it poor advise to suggest someone temporarily return to what was working. Since "Galway girl" implied her need is 'mission critical', that was the obvious choice to me.

Insane is a strong word. Even though basic WA is free and has no control over 3rd party services and plug-ins, I think it is unfortunate that after over 2.5 years, updates for Windows 7 (and Vista) compatibility is still lacking. WA itself still has a few Win 7 compatibility issues (thou minor, imo). I also think it's unfortunate that WA management waits for a major OS revision to be officially released before work is officially started on compatibility updates. Some may call that insane, but like i said insane is a strong word.

I don't think you read the whole thread. "Galway girl" never posted the requested info needed to help solve her problem. I only suggested the Winamp Lyrics V1.22 plug-in be temporarily removed since that was the only 3rd party plug-in mentioned and she chooses not too.

Anyway, she seems to have solved the problem (whatever it was), so I'm moving on.

XP is no longer being supplied or supported by Microsoft so we have all been forced to move to Win 7. I don't want to download lyrics I just want to type them in myself and add time stamps which is what I have been doing very successfully with the plugin Winamp Lyrics (Explorer Version) V1.22. The problem of Winamp stopping on and off and pausing during playback of some songs is something that has just happened since I installed the latest version of Winamp. Have not yet de-installed the lyrics plug in to test if that is the problem.

I should have added that I only installed the latest version of winamp on my win 7 computers so don't really know if the problem occurs on XP. I do know that the previous version of Winamp sith Lyrics plugin V1.22 worked extremely well. Unfortunately my XP computer is on it's way out.

Okay, Thought about removing the lyrics plug in but as this is an essential need I have decided against it for now. Checked Winamp Lyrics V1.22 developer blog and yes it is a 2001 version and it appears he has lost the source code and can't update it. So I have decided to try MiniLyrics which seemed to have good reports and so far appears to be a good lrics plug in - and is supposed to be compatible with Windows 7. Time will tell. Have an "activated" version and so far so good. Plays my .lrc files and provides an editing function to allow the creation of .lrc files, and allows one to turn off automatic lyric search on line. Won't remove V1.22 until satisfied the Minilyrics will do the job without causing Winamp to stop and jump during playback. Will know within a few weeks and will post results here in case any one else is interested.
Thanks for help!

Solution?

It appears that Winamp will stop working in different situations. For me, Winamp would stop working when either right clicking on a file OR clicking the "Rip" button. Winamp worked fine for me until I installed a few plug-ins. It was quite tedious, but I removed plug-ins until I found the culprit. I have ver. 5.622, and the culprit plug-in was in the "Winamp Essentials" plug-in group, and it was plug-in "ml_enqplay.dll" that caused my issue.

i think Koopa does winamp essentiuals, he'll be interested to know this i would think. however, you should use the latest version. 5.623 is by winamp, and winamp essentials is 3rd party, but still "semi-official," but not sure what the latest of that is.

a safe mode for plugins would let users narrow this down a lot quicker.

koopa is indisposed and issues with ml_enqplay as is _clearly_ stated in the post would need to be directed at me. and i am aware of issues where ml_enqplay can crash Winamp in some of the views but i've not had the means to finish the changes needed to resolve it. so there is no _fix_ currently.

Good Luck Axshunace! I hope it keeps working for you. I have ver 5.623 and I can't see the ml-enqplay.dll plugin listed anywhere, so it seems it's not the answer to my problems. It also seems that no matter what the application there are some issues with WA that can't be answerd at the moment- maybe under a future version. I have never had a problem with WA before and have been using it for some years. I am not a Programmer so I will just keep watching this site to see if anyone comes up with an overall solution.

Apart from the WA "stopping" problem, my other major problem with the program is that it does not seem to be compatible with my audio devices other than the basic onboard computers audio. I had to change to the sub-standard sounds of my computer. I have not tried running Winamp with my Desktop audio system which is an M-Audio Profire 610 and I receive the following error message from Nullsoft direct sound output v.2.6 "Error creating direct sound buffer 88780064" and if I use Wave output - there is no sound. Can anyone tell me what this means? I have tried changing buffers speeds without success.

Have you selected the Profire 610 as the default payback device in Windows ('control panel - sound - manage audio devices' page) and in the directsound output plug-in (configuration options - device tab)?

i know, my annoyance is that my name is clearly stated in the plug-ins about box but no one seems to bother to look at such things and is why it's only by chance i've seen the new post about it which was a similar case when it was first reported on here and yet again in that case was not directed towards me what with being the author of it *shrugs*

Randomly placed little 'Easter eggs' (or other 'eye candy') in a few about boxes might tempt more people into looking at them. Sometimes it helps to 'prime the pump', just a thought.

easter eggs are a general waste of time and attempts to do them in the past have caused more bug reports than they ever should have - so not going to happen in any of my plug-ins.

I didn't know easter eggs caused problems in the past. That too bad, many people seem to like them. The few still in WA are fun, imo.

There needs to be some way to encourage more users to look at important stuff they usually don't look at. I guess this is one of those age-old problems with no solution.
