What CPU are you using on your PC?

I want to know how the Intel vs AMD fight is going on.

I have a 1ghz Athlon 266 running at 750 because if it runs at full speed Windows becomes unstable. Fucking Windows98.

I finally got my CPU to start working at 1 ghz. I took my fan off and saw that the layers of thermal paste were completely gone and the heatsink was hitting directly against the die.

I applied shitloads of thermal paste to it again so that should last a while.

You shouldn't use loads as that is bad also, just a thin layer of artic silver should do, use a lot and the effectiveness decreases

I'm using a duron 800 running at 952, multiplier 8x, cpu fsb/pci 112/37mhz, and then uppedthe fsb alone by 7 mhz.

119*8 = 952

i would run the mem faster but one of me dimm's is only 100

You see, I got my computer in 1997, it was a kick ass system. Then 98 rolled around, still good. Then 99, ehh, normal. Thne 2000, it hit bottom....2001, its digging its own whole.

The excessive ram was my attempt to speed up something on my computer.
I am not sure if I will get a new comp for a while...

I actually got two computers.

My older computer was originally self-built at the beginning of 1998, yet upgraded several times. Now it is equipped with an Intel Celeron 433 Mhz @ 66 Mhz FSB, 192 MB RAM, 2 + 8 GB HDDs, 3Dfx Voodoo3 3000 AGP videocard, Creative Soundblaster PCI 64, and miscellaneous other shiznit inside .

My newer computer is home-built too, running an AMD Athlon 1.33 Ghz @ 266 FSB, 512 MB RAM, 60 + 40 GB HDDs in RAID-mode, GeForce 3 64 MB videocard, Audiophile 24/96 soundcard, 12x DVD drive, 16x12x40 CD-ROM burner, and some more hardware inside.

Anyways, I will stop now since all it is being asked for is the kind of CPU . I think in the past, Intel used to be better than AMD and the rest, providing much better FPU power, mainly. Nowadays, I think AMD is on the top right now, yet I think it might turn out to be Intel being back the best, as their RAMBUS technology seems to be able to kick AMDs ass .

Peace.

AMD K6 CPUs are inferior to Intel Celery, as they have a much weaker and less powerful FPU. The Celery seem to have less L2 Cache, but it runs @ full CPU core speed, making it almost even again . Even the K6-2's 3DNow! - instructions don't cut it in most cases.

Peace.

u grab the phreakin celery by it's phreakin neck and u over-clock that bitch it'll flyyyyyyyyyyyyy away!!!

OVER-CLOCK to about 150mhz faster than what it's doing now, it won't over heat (tho then again another fan might not hurt) and it'll go hella fast ('cause celeron's are supposed to be over-clocked)

Celerons are not supposed to be overclocked. Celerons have locked multipliers. Overclocking a Celeron requires overclocking the Front-Side Bus. Overclocking the front-side bus means overclocking the AGP, the PCI Bus, the Memory Bus, and basically, everything else, too. Overclocking the PCI bus results in a great deal of instability.

So, basically, the Celerons, are definitely not meant to be overclocked.

46 votes, and by no Intel is winning (24-21).

But which CPU are really the best, comparing cost, power and stability? I mean for normal PC usage.

Any modern processor from either Inel or AMD should be stable (barring the PIII 1.113 Ghz fiasco).

So, comparing cost and power, AMD wins. A 1.7 Ghz Pemtium 4 is just about on par with the 1.4 Ghz Athlon. And, the Athlon 1.4 Ghz costs less than the Pentium 4 1.3 Ghz.
