Winamp not available in Autoplay options for Music CD

Hi there,
I know this has been asked before, but I have followed _all_ tips, and none work. My problem is with getting Music CDs to autoplay with winamp and WinXP. I'll say all the things I have tried and what keeps happening.

1) winamp.ini is NOT read only (i can modify/save the file)
2) Whenever I check the "associate with Audio CDs box, it unchecks automatically every time I close and open the prefs window
3) The only option to select in the Autoplay tab of CD Rom prefs for Music CD is "play with Windows Media Player". I cannot select another program from here.
4) CDA files are associated with winamp
5) There is NO file type called (NONE)/Audio CD
6) WMP is not set to load on startup
7) I cannot uncheck the "audio cd" box from WMP
8) I have tried all this with disabling agent first

Does anyone have any other ideas here? How do you get winamp to show in the autoplay prefs box?

Well it seems WMP is taking over...

Try selecting 'play using media player' and associate winamp with audio cd's...Make sure the agent is set to 'maintain file associations'

I just tried it and it works for me....

Hi,
Yea, the problem is that when I click "associate with auto CDs", it never sticks. In other words, right when I close the prefs window and reopen, that box remains unchecked. This is the only option this happens with, though. I can change any of the other options and they stick just fine.

Nope. No other audio programs besides winamp and windows media player.

Ok, have u un-associated cd's with WMP??

Check it in its options > file types...

There is no file type in my folder options->files called N/A/Audio CD
CDA files are associated with winamp. There is no way to uncheck the box to associate audio cds with WMP in WMP.

Yea, i've tried the options-> file types in WMP. Whenever I unclick it, it check marks again. Similar to how winamp whenever I check it unchecks again. Also, there is a gray box around the box in WMP implying that it cannot be changed.

Hmmm...Somethings not right there...

Im not an expert on WMP (or winamp for that matter), but i'd try looking in the registry to see just whats going on with the .cda association.

Fire up regedit and have a look on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT find .cda and have a look at the values.

It'll show which program it's associated with and it may be possible to change it manually.

Of course it could be something simpler..Anyone else got any idea??

Hehe, thanks for the help ATMO, but that's not it. The registry definitely does have winamp associated with cda files. However, TweakXP does NOT list a autoplay handoff handler for winamp, just WMP. And yes, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling winamp. Does anyone else have any ideas here? I feel like I'm doin everything right

Not sure if there's an option to uninstall and reinstall CD Player in WinXP (c/o Add Remove Programs -> Windows Setup) or if it's all part of WMP now . . .

Its all part of WMP...And M$ decided it'd be a good idea if certain 'absolutely necessary' programs, like IE6, msn messenger, wmp etc. not have an uninstall option. Can be done manually, but its a bitch. Theres a registry key that has all the programs in the add/remove programs box, and some of them have a show=0 value or something...I found it once when stuffing around with xp's registry when i first installed it and havent found it since.

What program is associated to .cda???

That's not the problem...
It's the AudioCD reg entry that needs to be associated with Winamp to make Winamp the default player.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AudioCD in Win9x/ME
But .CDA filetype is irrelevant to autoplay . . .

Egg, you got it exactly. I can use cda files just fine on their own. Its the autoplay and "Associate with Audio CDs" button thats messed up. In WinXP, NONE of the fixes worked (the reghacks or the uninstalling of WMP and reinstalling). I have not tried just uninstalled WMP and leaving it uninstalled, as that is undesirable for other reasons. Does anyone know how to get the Audio CD file type back on XP? Should I try Eggs hack for 98/ME? I'm kind of scared to do that.... anyone?

Name: (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: AudioCD

There is a subcategory, called PersistentHandler, who's data field points to:
{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}

I definitely have no idea what this one means. Anyone knwo if anything should be changed here? Should data on the first one point to Winamp.File instead?

I've attached a screenshot of my (working) .cda path in regedit.

My persistent handler key is exactly the same, so its not that causing it.

This is further down the list, after all the extensions (.xxx)
There's no full stop (period), it's exactly as I typed it above.

In fact, it'd be even better if you could export that key to a .reg file, and then change the extension to .txt and post it as an attachment here.

Export it by left-clicking the AudioCD key to hi-lite it,
then: Registry menu -> Export registry key
(Make sure "selected branch" is checked in the Save Dialog)

The registry is structured totally different under these OS'es.

Interesting DJ Egg, I do not have a
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AudioCD

I do have a HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.AudioCD tho. Is this a difference between XP and other OS's? I also uninstalled mediaplayer (no option to uninstall cdplay, i don't think there is one in XP), and then reinstalled, but same problem...

Doesnt seem to be anything different than briansin talked about earlier, and the PersistentHandler folder and files are exactly the same.

It must be something else causing it.

Unzip winxp_audiocd.reg and run it (double left click, or rt click -> merge)

Note: you might want to open the .reg file in Notepad first, before merging it into the registry, just to make sure the paths are correct to shell32.dll (for cd icon) and to winamp.exe (this .reg file uses default "c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll" and "c:\program files\winamp\winamp.exe" paths)

So this totally worked DJ Egg. Was the problem just that uninstalling MMJB caused this to go away in the first place so we just had to recreate it somehow? And on WinXP no one knows how to recreate it except to find someone else who has it? LOL! Sounds very microsofty. I have a future request for winamp tho -
I assume that the reason my "Associate winamp with audio cds" box didn't stick is cause there was no registry entry for AudioCD. How about in the future winamp creates this if there is none? Would that be bad? Then you coudl really advertise winamp as a MMJB killer

Wayhey!

Yes, you've got it there, to a tee!

Uninstalling MMJB caused the problem
(thanx for finally confirming this)

It deletes the AudioCD regkey when you uninstall it,
further proving how craply programmed it is.

The only way to fix the problem is to recreate this regkey.
I don't use WinXP and only knew the reg fix for Win9x/ME . . .
until now.

Thanks to Atmo for providing the info so I could create the reg fix.

As for Nullsoft including the regfix in the program, well yes, it would be nice... but only if they gave me credit for it

DJ Egg: You rule! I made a leap of faith and used the reg zip file on my Vista Home Premium and it actually worked perfectly. Music CD now correctly autoplays. Somebody needs to kindly ask for developers to create that key if it doesn't exist. Many many thanks.....
