Web site .wav files - WinAmp/WMP???

A number of web sites I access have .wav files embedded as background music. I have used WinAmp as my default player for ALL files for several years designated as such in the WinAmp preferences menu. I recently upgraded WMP to ver.9 and because of my loyalty to WinAmp UNCHECKED all files to make WMP the default player for those files. Apparently that was a mistake, because I lost the capability of hearing the embedded .wav files in those web sites I enjoy. After days of frustration I relinquished and checked WMP as being the default player for .wav files and "voila" they're back.

Question:
Why wouldn't WinAmp play the .wav files embedded in the web sites.

I am still using WinAmp for all other player needs, i.e. streaming radio, CD, etc.

Not sure if I understand the question or not . . .
How do you listen to embedded files in Winamp?
They're suppose to play in the background through the browser, yes?
You mean you just can't hear them, while winamp is concurrently running?
If so, try switching to DirectSound Output in Winamp.
Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Output: select out_ds.dll to make it active.

If the problem persists, please provide some system specs:
cpu, ram, soundcard, windows os, directx.

...and explain the problem in as much precise detail as possible
(including sample url's)

CPU = Pentium, 233MHZ
RAM 64 Mb
SoundCard - ESS 1887
OS Windows 98se
DirectX 8.1

Winamp - Default player with ALL files selected.

Scenario: Winamp (launched OR unlaunched, NOT playing concurrently); on-line 56Kbps modem, connected at 52Kbps; Internet Explorer 6 (launched). Loaded web-site http://members.shaw.ca/lotusbud/ specifically to listen to .wav file embedded in the site. (I have accessed the site and listened to the file often over the past few years.) No sound!

A couple of weeks ago, I had upgraded my Winamp to ver 2.91 as well as Windows Media Player to ver. 9. Being a Winamp fan, I dutifully unchecked file association boxes, including .wav, in WMP. Apparently this was an error. Following several days of reloading - Winamp, OS, IE6, etc. and attempting to configure Winamp (including all of the Output possibilities) to play the embedded .wav file found in the above mentioned url, I finally simply checked the association box in WMP allowing WMP to be the default player for .wav files. Finally, sound.

My question is: Why didn't Winamp perform that function?

Incidentally, WMP doesn't visibly launch to the desktop, it just plays the embedded file.

Winamp doesn't play embedded files. The browser plays them via the WMP active-x plugin. It shouldn't make any difference what player is default for .wav files.

Sorry, but I'm not sure why you can't hear the embedded wav files if Winamp is made the default wav player. It doesn't make any sense to me. Anyone else got any ideas?

The relevant html for your sample site is:
<embed src="cherokee[1][1].wav" width="16" height="16" autostart="true" loop="true">

Winamp is my default WAV player, but never opens when I visit web pages with embedded audio files. They always play directly through the browser, like they're supposed to.

At a guess, look for updated soundcard drivers . . . ?

I had determined that the file was a .wav from the relative html source information available through IE. Interestingly enough, IE would play embedded .mid or .midi files found in web site files.

An UNeducated guess regarding the prior lack of sound: The active browser IE 6, a Microsoft product closely linked with Windows, by default uses only the Windows Media Player to play embedded files. When I cleared the association box .wav in WMP, IE had no available player "authorized" to play the embedded .wav files, thus no sound.

In any case, checking the .wav box in "file types" under the preferences of WMP allowed the embedded files to be played. Therefore, mine is not the reason why, mine is to be a happy camper again.

Thanks for your help. If anyone has a definitive answer to this question, please enlighten us.

ADDENDUM to previous note:

I still use Winamp for ALL my player needs, with the apparent exception of imbedded sound files in web sites. I think that Winamp really kicks the llamas ass.
