Waste

i know AOL dont like it... but.. that hasnt stoped people from getting there hands on it.. its GPL, theres nothing AOL can actualy do about it...

i hosted it at www.dhorrocks2003.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk and currently i have had 934973 downloads of waste/waste source so far.. thats over a whoping 650GB. also, there have been over 2 million unique page veiws too...

just thought i would update you on how WATSE is doing, and how AOL are missing out on what seems like a very popular product.

Actually.. since AOL owns Nullsoft, and Nullsoft owns WASTE, AOL can do with WASTE whatever they want to do with it, no? Although, I'm not sure if a company can 'withdraw' a release. Legally, that is.

baaf: anything under GPL, anyone who has it... can distriute it as long as its in its origional state... witch is all im doing.. also.. i think GPL lets you edit the source and build your own stuff from it, as long as you say what the origional source was

Speaking of modification.. someone should make this usable on the internet (I believe the current release only works on LANs). It'd probably work not unlike Direct Connect.. but securely.

More info here

Managed to get a 3 way set up going, with mixed results. Looks good for small groups of friends, but don't see that it offers much more than a private hub on DC.

Early days yet, we'll see.

As for waste, I never thought I needed it since it's for LANs but I may try it out as mentioned that it can work over the internet. Thanks Bizzy.

and on a technical note to flog a horse here, AOL can actually pull the release, but to do so, there are some things they need to do. They need to show that Nullsoft could not release the product without their permission. I believe that this will not be achievable due to the way that nullsoft has always been able to release whatever whenever. If AOL can show that, then they can state that nullsoft did not have the right to release it GPL.

And On that day, the Lords of the land said unto their Master Architect, "The temple you have made to the gods of Wasabi and Maki has brought us no great prosperity" and they sent out him into the lands.

As he traveled to a far off land, he found he wasn't traveling alone, but that he had gained companions, and when they found their new land, they started work on a new temple, one that would be OPEN to all who wanted to worship.

WASTE was mentioned in this weeks TIME (owned by AOL/Time Warner)(here I go breaking more copyrights)
"The cat-and-mouse game between computer programmers and the music industry is heating up. The next generation of file-sharing software, programmers promise, will provide anonymity that not even ISPs will be able to crack. New online services with names like Earth Station 5 and W.A.S.T.E. claim to have done that already, but none are quite ready for prime time"

I thought AOL wanted to keep it on the d/l

of course they don't want it on the d/l. Now that it has been 'released' to the public, they have to act like they knew about it the whole time, and like they were in conrol. Very few of teh general population know what really happened.
