Read!!!! Problem With Shoutcast????
It seems there is a large number of people un able to connect right now. Everyone seems to be getting the hated "error connecting to yp.shoutcast.com" error. I am not sure why this is happening but it seems to be happening to quite a few people. Please do not post a new topic asking why this is happening. If anyone can answer why this is happening please do it here.
Thanks Ska Rules!!! |

and it seems it not just a problem connecting to yp, there is also a common theme of users connecting to stations, buffering then connect dying.
are these problems related? if anyone can answer why that is hapning that would be more important to me. i dont really care if my server is in public shoutcast list or not. |

Just wanted to move this back to the top so everyone would see it. Sorry if I shouldn't have done it.

Can you resolve the IP address of yp.shoutcast.com. Pinging does not work but where does a traceroute stop? It works for me.

Thats the same address where it stops for me. As I can actually access yp.shoutcast.com I suppose it would be already the next machine. yp.shoutcast.com is identical to www.shoutcast.com. Can you access the main Shoutcast webpage?

In this case it might be possible that a connection or transmission of data to yp.shoutcast.com is prevented by some timeout.

whats really bizarre is that this is obviously only happening to some people and not everyone, as you can see digitally imported and a boatload of others are obviously connected and working fine.
bah - im going to have a corona and lounge in the pool. maybe this is just a boring dream.

Might be some routing issue for people coming from certain providers.

Still seem to be some connection problems
I noticed all the problems, too. My Internet service provider (a university network) can be unreliable at times, so I'm not sure whether I'm dealing with a combination of problems.
For about two hours yesterday afternoon (U.S. time) I got that "error connecting" message repeatedly. But I still listeners, just fewer than normal. But here's what I'm noticing now: It's 2 a.m. Aug. 2, U.S. Eastern Time. My listener numbers are unusually low, with more than a half hour of 0 listeners. This has never happened since I started broadcasting 4 months ago. Other stations in my category (Latin) also have unusually low numbers. Even SalsaStream's slow-speed connection has 0 listeners. I've never seen that happen before either. But other stations seem about normal. Are there still connnection problems at Shoutcast? Or will it just take a while to recover our listener numbers? |

To SkaFreak and Tom, about the Shoutcast problem
Yes, I read that. My last post was in response to that one. I was saying that though Tom and the Shoutcast have tried earnestly to correct the problem, there is still something wrong with the servers at Shoutcast. Perhaps it's a setting that needs to be adjusted.
There is no other explanation for what is happening now. My server is touching Shoutcast at regular intervals. My Internet browser opens and connects at a regular speed. At 1 a.m. Saturday morning my local time (12 noon Friday U.S. East coast time), the problems began, with numbers dropping suddenly from 35 to 0. My listener numbers rose again to something close to normal about two hours later, but then fell to what they are now at about 4 p.m. U.S. East coast time. They haven't been normal since. I notice that most of the stations in the Latin directory are about normal, but there are notable exceptions, including my station and SalsaStream's low-speed broadcast. They too are below normal numbers for this time. I still only have 3 listeners, no more than 4 or 5. I'm telling you that I usually have 20 or 30 listeners at this time on a Saturday night (saturday morning in America, Saturday afternoon in Europe). Now, I have three. Please, don't tell me to "just look at another post". I work every single day to make my stream appealing to listeners, and that work has paid off so far with a very positive response from listeners. Nothing about the programming has changed or would chase listeners away. Two or three listeners is simply not acceptable at this stage. It's like hundreds are trying to connect and can't. Tech-support--some Support, Please! |

some copies of my log to show you what is happening...
Please forgive this for being a very long post, but I think you need to see my log to understand why I'm concerned. You will notice that the problems I'm talking about coincide with what has been described in this thread. I'll provide some comments along the way about my observations.
First, here is my log as it appeared just before the problems started. Touch intervals here are about every 3 mins. and 1-2 seconds, varying sometimes to as slow as 3:04. Still, listener numbers remained as expected for that hour. There were lots of disconnections, but they were replaced with new connections fairly evenly: <08/01/03@23:59:53> [yp_tch] yp.shoutcast.com touched! <08/02/03@00:00:00> [dest: 156.17.236.36] connection closed (364 seconds) (UID: 206)[L: 33]{Bytes: 4123589}(P: 27) <08/02/03@00:00:10> [dest: 80.32.11.125] starting stream (UID: 228)[L: 34]{A: WinampMPEG/2.9}(P: 3) <08/02/03@00:00:44> [dest: 207.43.195.202] starting stream (UID: 229)[L: 35]{A: RMA/1.0 (compatible; RealMedia)}(P: 27) <08/02/03@00:00:52> [dest: 80.32.11.125] connection closed (43 seconds) (UID: 228)[L: 34]{Bytes: 347126}(P: 3) <08/02/03@00:01:16> [dest: 80.32.11.125] starting stream (UID: 230)[L: 35]{A: WinampMPEG/2.9}(P: 3) <08/02/03@00:01:38> [dest: 80.32.11.125] connection closed (21 seconds) (UID: 230)[L: 34]{Bytes: 221184}(P: 3) <08/02/03@00:01:43> [dest: 217.162.162.253] starting stream (UID: 231)[L: 35]{A: Nullsoft Winamp3 version 3.0 build 4****(P: 3) <08/02/03@00:02:18> [dest: 217.162.162.253] starting stream (UID: 232)[L: 36]{A: FreeAmp/2.x}(P: 33) <08/02/03@00:02:26> [dest: 80.32.11.125] starting stream (UID: 233)[L: 37]{A: WinampMPEG/2.9}(P: 36) <08/02/03@00:02:41> [dest: 80.32.11.125] connection closed (15 seconds) (UID: 233)[L: 36]{Bytes: 139264}(P: 36) <08/02/03@00:02:42> [dest: 80.32.11.125] starting stream (UID: 234)[L: 37]{A: WinampMPEG/2.9}(P: 36) <08/02/03@00:02:53> [dest: 80.131.171.152] connection closed (1306 seconds) (UID: 174)[L: 36]{Bytes: 13795328}(P: 24) <08/02/03@00:02:55> [yp_tch] yp.shoutcast.com touched! <08/02/03@00:02:56> [dest: 200.106.24.110] connection closed (214 seconds) (UID: 227)[L: 35]{Bytes: 1589248}(P: 35) <08/02/03@00:03:09> [dest: 218.45.21.207] starting stream (UID: 235)[L: 36]{A: WinampMPEG/2.9}(P: 24) <08/02/03@00:03:11> [dest: 80.32.11.125] connection closed (28 seconds) (UID: 234)[L: 35]{Bytes: 224517}(P: 36) <08/02/03@00:03:27> [dest: 218.45.21.207] connection closed (18 seconds) (UID: 235)[L: 34]{Bytes: 350334}(P: 24) Next, here's where the first noticeable collapse in listener numbers occurred, from 28 down to 8 in just 3 minutes. (I would expect at least 70 at that time). Then, at 4:35, the final disaster came, the one I still haven't recovered from. The numbers began to plummet and rise, with listeners obviously trying in droves to stay connected and failing. Listener numbers ranged wildly from as low as 7 to higher than 30. I suspect they all gave up in frustration. After all, I wouldn't listen to a station as unreliable as this one is, either.... Please help. Thank you. |

have you tried listening to your station during this time?
The shoutcast.com thing is just a directory, it would not make your server unstable if it couldn't connect, and listeners already connected would be able to enjoy listening to your station despite shoutcast.com's dissppearence. Also don't read too much into logs, I don't. You really have no idea why some client connected for 0 secs, it happens often, and could be technical problems on there in, or between you and them. Also it could be that they are just channel surfing. Have you gotten any complaints from listeners? -Jay | Radio Toolbox.com |

The connection problem
Thanks, Jay. That reply was more considerate.
As for listening to my own station via the internet, yes. But only on my own computer, using a player separate from the one I use for broadcasting, of course. Then briefly on a neighbor's computer, when there were only three listeners. Connection seemed fine. I am on a LAN network, which may or may not be the culprit here. I suspect what I hear over this LAN does not reflect what somebody hears in, say, California. I've heard before that Shoutcast is only a directory, but then why was the broken web server that Tom mentioned earlier affecting streams? And is everybody sure it's fixed now? I've gotten no complaints from listeners, only positive vibes. There's no reason that response should change now. There have been no changes in programming. It's all the same Salsa, carefully chosen, with brief promos or IDs every 20-30 minutes. Actually, I'd appreciate a good, honest, constructive complaint from somebody who cares about the music, but none has ever come my way. If Shoutcast can't resolve this, then the next step is to go to the campus computing center, my ISP. There have been similar problems before, but never this severe, usually only momentary. If they can't resolve it, then I'm quitting. I'll work as hard as I have on this for 50 listeners, but never for just 4. |

Another possibility...
I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting so much on this problem, but the mystery behind this sudden death of my station is mind-blowing...
I'm wondering if it's possible for someone to block my stream, much the same way as one jams a radio signal, only digitally. If someone wanted to control my output in this way, how would they do it? How would I find out who they are, and how could I defend my stream from it? That is if it's even possible in the first place. I'm thinking RIAA, or perhaps worse, some govt. authority somewhere. By the way, if you want to hear it for yourself, my stream's IP is http://165.132.105.134:8001/listen.pls . I'm located in South Korea. |

let me demystify this a little for you.
the reason your listener numbers were effected so drastically is because you lost an advertising outlet (shoutcast.com) this is where the majority of your listeners are coming from. Once you are not listed your server is basically just out there by itself with no way for people to find it except for maybe by your own site links. And usually unless people REALLY like your station, they won't bother looking for you and move on to some other salsa channel. I also tuned into your station just now and it seemed fine, it buffered a little but not so much that it's irritating. If you are having a problem with your server's connnection to the internet you will also have a hard time sustaining listeners. The best thing you can do is during these times when you notice low listener levels is to have a friend tune in and listen.... Ah wait... it's buffering pretty bad now. Get that checked out, I would imagine that this buffering and the YP problem are related to the fact that your server's connection to the internet is failing. -Jay | Radio Toolbox.com |

Hi, Jay. I appreciate your quick replies and the attention you gave the station by listening to it. And I appreciate your reassurances. That's encouraging.
Yes, I know about the frequent inconsistencies of my ISP. Until last night, when all this started, I would lose listeners to a lot of underruns, but within minutes they'd all come right back. I considered it an honor that they'd do so--persist in listening despite the unreliable signal. As I said before, I've been broadcasting successfully for four months. If I understand you right, I lost some 50-80 steady listeners all because of a brief outage on the Shoutcast directory? If that's so, then why haven't they come back? I've actually been listed on the directory the whole time--that never failed. And by now, during tonight's peak, 24 hours later, they should all be back. Two more pieces of statistics for you: --I checked my Netstats. All looks normal to me, but then I don't really speak that lingo. Could you take a look at the tcp part and see if you notice anything to raise concern? I've pasted them below. --I also noticed that I have no European listeners. They would normally account for probably 80 percent of my listeners at this time. At last check through Whois, all 3 of my listeners were in the Eastern U.S. Is there some Internet problem in Europe at the moment? I heard about the imminent Internet attacks against Windows machines. you would be surprised at how much a difference the directory listing can make. I cannot comment as to why you have not rebounded from this, possibly the fickle connection could be the reason. I am not sure what to make of your netstats, maybe someone with more understanding can help you there.

So, my whole audience gave up together at the same time yesterday because of my ISP problems? I didn't know the problems were that bad.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see if anything changes tomorrow. If you think of anything else, please let me know. Thanks for your time.... |

Jay, or anyone else who may have an explanation,
There must be a better answer to this problem than the ones I've been offered. I do not see any evidence that my ISP is failing. Internet pages are opening normally, in most cases rapidly. It can vary by site, but it always has. Though I only have 2 listeners right now, my server is touching Shoutcast regularly, every 3 mins 2 seconds. There WAS one message a few minutes ago that said "yp.shoutcast.com gave error ()," and that was preceded by loss of 4 listeners--none left. But such things have always occurred from time to time, with no major loss of listeners. Even if it is my ISP, I can't accept that ALL listeners would decide in unison not to ever listen to my station again because of that. Please realize the magnitude of this loss in listenership. It defies logic. For three months, this station has consistently maintained numbers above 40 at this time of day, often peaking above 60, with perhaps 2000 connections made in a day. During weekdays, listeners regularly peaked above 70 between midnight and 6 a.m. my local time. Now, suddenly, within a few hours, that has all disappeared? How? Why? I know you are all busy and that most or all of you are volunteers in this forum, but could you go back and look again at my previous postings? Please pay attention to the comments and descriptions I gave you on my logs Please, consider these points carefully: (1) My Internet browser opens pages normally (2) Shoutcast server touches yp regularly, except for occasional lapses. It has always had occasional lapses. (3) Listener numbers fell all at once, at exactly 6:17 p.m. U.S. East Coast time. They dropped from 19 (already low for that time of day due to previous plummets) to 1. This happened while you were experiencing Shoutcast web server problems. (4) The numbers never rose again. Normally they would, within an hour, return to what they were before the plummet. (5) My listeners have all been dedicated, with usually half of those connected at any one time staying for many hours without stopping. There really is no reason now for all of this to so suddenly stop. Have you heard of similar cases? Is this a common pattern? I would have thought once-popular Shoutcast stations would just fade, not suddenly lose all their listeners. Again, I ask the previous question: Is it possible for someone to block my transmission, so that most Internet ISPs in the world cannot distribute it? Who would do such a thing? RIAA? Perhaps a "rival" station that didn't like the high numbers I was achieving? I'm serious, and I'm not paranoid. There's a lot I don't understand about the Internet, and there are a lot of unscrupulous people using the Internet. If someone is blocking my transmission, and someone at Shoutcast knows about it, I have a right to know. Otherwise, if you have a full technical explanation, please offer it. I have a right to know that, too. I've worked and lived with this far too much to just brush it off. I get paid for my work and commitment in listener numbers--nothing else. |

it's very doubtful that someone is jamming your connection, the only persons who have that power are your ISP, and if they value your relationship with them they would not do this without at least notifying you.
As far as similar cases, the only thing closely resembling to this type of problem is an ISP problem, just because you can browse the internet does not mean that you can serve high bandwidth audio to 70 listeners. I would run speed tests on your connection to varify that you are getting the connection to the internet you should be. Also if your connection does recover to what it was before, you shouldn't expect it to bounce back overnight, give it a week at least before starting to worry. I am sorry if this is not enough for you but it's doubtful a better explanation will come without more information. -Jay | Radio Toolbox.com |
