Playing Audio CD in Winamp causes lock up!

Winamp freezes my Win XP Pro instantly when I try to play an audio CD with it . I just updated to Winamp 2.91 and I also updated to Windows Media Player 9. I was playing a new perfect CD in Media Player and it sounded like crud. It was fairly distorted. This has never happened before. So I went to play the CD with Winamp and I froze solid. It froze the instant I hit "play". Not a program crash but an absolute freeze. Had to hit reset on computer. So I removed Winamp 2.91 and went with 2.81 and it also caused the freeze. Winamp will play mp3s fine; no freeze. I'm not using any plugins, by the way. I have no problem accessing a CD in other ways while Winamp is open/playing mp3 files it only locks up when trying to PLAY an audio CD. Any ideas?

Also, what the heck is wrong with WMP 9? I don't recall CDs ever sounding distorted.

Thanks for any help.

Winamp 2.91 -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Input -> CD plugin -> config:
Checkmark "enabl digital audio extraction"
(requires winamp restart to take effect)

If the problem persists:

Uninstall -> Reinstall procedure:
