winamp2 sound drops while playing games

very very odd problem im having, which i suspect is something deeper than winamp2...

i have always listened to mp3's while playing games (quake3,mohaa,cmr3,bf1942,nfs,etc) and yet somehow in the last week or 2 it seems that *randomly* while playing bf1942 or cmr3 that winamp is suddenly stop playing whatever mp3 it is currently on (and no, its not the same mp3 causing the stop). At the same time, I always have Mirc going, and use its Highlight & sound features.... when winamp stops playing, mirc will no longer be able to play any sounds--which leads me to suspect that whatever part of the OS winamp & mirc are using to access the sound hardware is getting messed up...

.... when the mp3 pauses, it does not start again. Nor will any other mp3 play. The visual display in the winamp window shows music playing for like a second or three, then it stops suddenly, though no music could be heard over headphones. Restarting winamp2 does not solve it, nor does reinstalling winamp2 many many times. The only way to get winamp2 to play mp3's again is to restart the system.

winamp3 however, does not have this issue it seems. And while winamp2 is broken and cannot play mp3's until the next reboot, winamp3 can with no problems (though winamp3 sucks, very slow and doesnt have the contextual menus winamp2 has, so i dont want to use it).

However, all the sounds in the games & websites & everything else work just fine... just no sounds from mirc & winamp2. Very strange.

ive tried installing a few new drivers for my sound card (sb audigy) but it doesnt seem to help at all. Im thinking of finding my original driver for it and installing it and seeing what happens... will update when i do.

my system info:
amd xp1700+, asus a7v333, 768mb pc2100 crucial, wdc 7200rpm drives, soundblaster audigy mp3, sennheiser hd570's, running windows2000pro sp4 (same issue w/ sp3)

The issue first occured with winamp 2.90, and then i updated to 2.91 and the issue is still there.

if anyone has anything to suggest or any answers, plz post them

i installed the original drivers that came w/ my sound card. im also looking at the plugins for winamp output, specifically directsound & wave_out. wave_out has "enabled" checked.... should i mess with anything in here?

i think it has to do with my having "hardware acceleration" set in bf1942 and cmr3 that is causing the issue.
