Random scratchy sound

DSP Plug-in: Simply Surround
Output: Wave-out
OS: Windows XP

At random times when I listen to an MP3, the sound gets scratchy. I replay the file to check if it's an in-file error, and the scratchiness (and sometimes skipping!) disappear.

Ironically, this all started happening after reports of the Blaster worm, but I've got all the necessary patches for that..

Now I realize why... I haven't updated in forever. Answered my own query... How bout that?
