my files are being renamed

randomly my files started to get renamed to - in winamp2...it seems that there is always 20 files like that, becuase when i fix them, when i reopen winamp, more files are switched to just -

(im talking about the name and artist of a file in playlist editor)

please help

Looks like you are loosing ID3 tags. Install WMP9 recently and add the files to the library? There has been reports that WMP eats ID3 tags.

WMP9? im unfamilliar with that...

well ive uninstalled winamp a few times and it keeps doin it so i dunno...ive been redoing the ID3 tags, both v1 and v2 but it then it just renames other stuff

WMP9 = Windows Media Player ver. 9

Do you have some type of a playlist plug-in? Winamp does not rename ID3 tags on its own.

theres a 'Winamp Media Libary v1.1 but i didnt install it it was already there

now its happening to some of the files that i redo the id3 tag for after whatever renames them to '-' does, go BACK to '-'..but once i play it, then you see the name

still gayin me out here...im thinking about going back to winamp3, but i hate winamp3 becuase it ALWAYS freezes and the crossfader just pisses me off...i no i can disable it but it freezes like mad

I think Sawg is on to something. Do you have Windows Media Player version 9? WMP is the media player that is prepackaged with Windows. Apparently there is a feature of WMP9 that updates/rewrites ID3 by searching the internet. If it can not find info the tags fields are left blank. This is done surreptitiously in the background. In Winamp's playlist the blank fields will appear as a – dash. I think this feature in WMP9 can be turned off. I don't have WMP9 so I don't know how change that option.

As far as I know Winamp does not change/rewrite ID3 tags automatically or by it self.
