Not much, honestly. We can either download a 4MB program or like some others at this forum prefer, a 1-2MB program(Foobar). Both of which are far superior than Apple's creation that they made so they can get more money off of their iTunes service.

Don't forget that Winamp has been capable of CD-Ripping for a long time before Winamp 5 or 2.9x

Ok, pre 2.90 we had to use the CDReader plugin to get "digital audio extraction", but now this is capable with the default in_cdda plugin.

So, with DAE enabled, you can use any output plugin to rip to whatever format, and at full speed. You don't have to use the built-in library ripper.

out_vorbis
out_enc
out_mp3
out_whatever

Also, Diskwriter can be configured to use any ACM codec installed on the system, so if you've got Fraunhofer Pro, then you're already in there.
(though out_enc is better, 'cos it comes with LameEnc, yay!)

Sure, it's not got all the features of CDex/EAC, but neither has the built-in ripper. But as long as your hardware is good, the end results are pretty good too

iTunes is great in theory but has to be one of the ugliest players I've seen. It almost reminds me of java applets...dull colors and shitty content. Musicmatch has the same prices for music, plus it works on windows.

That was my point above, none of that money will actually go to Nullsoft, just straight to the people they get the MP3 lisences from.

Before saying wheter you're going to buy it or not, don't you better wait until you know the price?
I'm also planning to buy Winamp Pro but I first have to see how much it costs ad then I will consider.

BTW, does anybody know an aproximate price yet?

PS: I'm not talking to anyone in special, it's just my opinion

its not going to be much, just enough to cover the costs of the licences it grants.

I'm not going to pay for winamp pro when it comes out because I already have programs that I like using that do the job winamp pro will do. If Winamp Pro has features that these programs do not or do things better than my programs than I will gladly buy it but as of now Winamp Pro doesnt seem to have the features that will compel me to buy it as it currently stands.

Maybe if they made it cook my toast or soemthing hehe

if you pay for winamp pro, it is my understanding AOL will get the money.
however, that money will help pay Nullsofts employees, as well as, hopefully, hire more, or improve the conditions or something.

AOL users get screwed with. That is the worst ISP service I have ever had the nonprivilage to see. You pay 23.95 usd a month for slow speeds bad connections ADVERTISING IN YOUR ISP EMAIL and bloated software. Plus you dont even get discounts for other AOL products or any special privilages that regular users cant just access by going to AOL.com.

I'll buy a Winamp Pro if money goes to nullsoft and not aol.

No, actually, there isn't anything preventing someone from doing that, besides the lawsuit that would be in their mailbox about two seconds after they posted it.

You are an ass.

Your post is an insult to everyone at Nullsoft.
You don't have to pay for it, if you don't want to use it. Stealing it would be bad though.
Developers need money, to feed and clothe there families. No, really, they do. Would you prefer Justin developed Winamp only in his spare time and spent most of the week earning cash working behind a hotdog stand?
Besides, you'll only be paying for the features that cost Nullsoft money to include.
I'll gladly pay for some of the hard work they've put in.

Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. But if he's even a wee lil bit smart, he won't go declaring he does or intends to on a message board. Especially if it's of the software he's ripping off.

I thought that AOL funded Nullsoft and therefore indirectly paid justin and everyone else...just because a product is free dosen't mean someones not making money off of it.

Thanks, but in any case, unless Winamp 5 supports ALL Winamp 2.9x plug-ins....... no dice for me.

Of course it does. Winamp is Winamp is Winamp (1.x, 2.x, 5.x) is not Winamp3.

Some might need updating slightly though...

Something along the lines of . . .

Product 1: Winamp (0.x, 1.x, 2.x, 5.x)
Typed as Winamp 2, Winamp 2.91, Winamp 5.0
Built on standard Win32 engine (C++ / DLL's, etc)

Product 2: Winamp3 (current public version = 1.0.0.488 = v1.0 build #488)
Built from scratch on the wasabi platform

Winamp 5.0 is the direct upgrade from Winamp 2.9x
ie. Unlike Winamp3, it installs to the same dir and overwrites/replaces it.

Features from Winamp3 have been added to the Winamp (Win32) core, but not the exact same features, if you know what I mean . . . eg.
Freeform skin support via a plugin
New video window (added in 2.9x forerunner, but can now be integrated into main window)
New library (initially added in 2.9x forerunner)
Built-in XFade (button/slider now links into out_ds)
Repeat one, all, none (workaround . . . that actually works now, yay!)
Multiple playlists support - no pledit sidecar, but in library & also accesible via: playlist window -> Manage Playlist (list) button.

Features in Winamp 5.0 but not in Winamp3:
Ripping/Burning
Folder monitoring to auto update the library
Unicode TTF Font support (beta2)
Shoutcast Radio & TV listings (ok, this was also added in 2.9x)
"Send To" menu (in library right-click contexts)
Mass tagging capability (limited, but there!)
video & avs attachable/detachable in main window
Advanced (Global) Title Formatting
Full support for all Winamp 2.x skins & plugins
Everything else from Winamp 2.x . . . ie. all the "missing" features that people moaned about when Winamp3 was first released . . . and yes, we will now get it again for Winamp 5.0, but on a much smaller scale - tf
(eg. where's the sidecar?, where's "play next"? etc).

And yes wasabi. Freeform skin support is wasabi
C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\freeform\xml
