Ogg Vorbis or AAC - which is best?

I got tired of the old mp3 format.
To which one of the the above do you recommend me to switch to?

On other matter, I see on the forums that everybody uses the DirectSound output plugin, is it better than the waveOut?
When I first downloaded Winamp many years ago the waveOout was the default plugin and I never changed it since.

I always thought MP3 led they way for the best quality for size audio, followed closely (if not moreso) by WMA...

Hasn't this thread been up?

Waveout is better for 95/98/ME
Directsound is better for Nt/2000/xp

ogg vorbis is the best legally. i'm not sure where they compare as far as compression, but i suspect ogg may just win out.

and m2k has already dealt with the directsound/waveout differences.

Not according to the AOL Legal dept.

/me laments the lack of vorbis encoding in winamp 5 alpha

Is there a format that plays 5-channel music (like dvd-audio but compressed of course)?

I can't find a plugin for it and I don't want to switch to foobar when WA5 makes a bell ring in my tummy .
