wont play mp3

Hi
When i first open winamp3 i can play an mp3 from my playlist for a short period....6 seconds. It then stops. the spectrum analyser goes dead as well. No error message pops up. If i then go to play an mp3 again it does even play. But it says that it has played the mp3 for 1 sec. The spectrum anlayser lights up but quickly dies away. Happy to provide details of my computer set up.

Not sure whats relevant. I have tried reinstalling winamp3 and from memory earlier versions of winamp do the same.

I hope this hasnt been covered in the forum b4 i couldnt find it.
cheers for your time.

a bit of additional info that might be of interest. I have an old soundvortex2 soundcard. The company who i bought it off no longer supports it. So I didnt have a driver to use it with windows 2000. I managed to get a beta version driver off the net. Would this affect winamp??

Please use the button.

Do the mp3s play ok with windows media player? Where are they located? (network, cd, etc.) What's your system specs? OS, Winamp, ram, cpu, etc.

I was away for a while.
But I'm feeling much better now.

the mp3s play fine on my friends computer where they are stored. We both have winamp3. I have tried using VBRfix to see if the headers of the files are mixed up. The message that comes up is that they are not VBR files...
I access the files over a network, but i had the same problem when i stored them on my own c drive.

O/S Type windows 2000 proffesional
Winamp Version 3 (but winamp2 did same thing)
Memory 128mb
Processor AMD Athalon K6 (orK6-2,K6-111)
CPU Speed 650 MHz
DirectX version: none

I tried playing the same mp3s on windows media player. It seems to play but no audio comes out.

I have since found other threads describing similar problems to the one im experiencing.
i typed in "mp3s wont play" looked at a couple of threads
this one is kind of like my problem:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....mp3s+wont+play
but unlike these ppl my mp3s dont work on other winamp versions.
My IT support is going to load windows media player vers 9 on my computer tonight. However, I would much prefer to use winamp.
ta for your time.

Windows media player 9 behaved much like the others. It played the demo ok. Then when i go to play an mp3 from my list it plays but no sound comes out. I tried the demo again and it plays but no sound comes out. Im thinking that it may be the drivers for my soundcard. The Beta Version driver i use for my aureal vortex soundcard is:
SonicVortex2 Drivers for Windows 2000
WDM Version 5.10.2500, Build 49 Driver Release (Beta Release)
available at
www.videologic.com
Does anybody know:
1) Could this be the cause of my problem?
2) Is there a better driver to be using?

hops...

Just now I noticed that you are "viewing" this thread you started. I assume that you've tried everything and are still having a problem.

So, while you are here, I will suggest that you download/install Winamp 5.0 and see how it goes. Read about where to obtain it and where to install it in this thread.

Let us know how it goes. I think you'll be impressed.

Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads.

cool....but doesnt work for me.

Winamp5 looks really cool. I uninstalled winamp3 and installed winamp5. Unfortunately I still have the same problem. Winamp5 plays the song for a couple of seconds then stops. If I try to play a song again it doesnt play at all.
If I reboot i get the same thing all over again.
I think the problem is the soundcard driver if I can find a good driver, all my problems may be fixed. Any good soundcard driver sites out there. I will start searching now.
cheers for all your time
