Yeah... Adobe is best- If you wanted to stay legal you could get photoshop "Special Edition" which kills some of the features and it's like 30 dollars or so...

ANOTHER option you could try is whats called
the "GIMP". Its completely freeware, because
it's a linux application. There is a real good windows port available, and I after
using it will say truthfully that it can
NEARLY do everything the Adobe can.

MS Paint has been clinically proven to stifle
creativity- the Surgeon General recomends that you stop using it- especcially if you
are pregnant.

I find that Paint Shop Pro from Jasc to be a good compromise between Photoshop and a basic paint program. It can do layers, which is key, but doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles of Photoshop.

Also, PSP is a lot faster than Photoshop, and comes with a fairly good animated gif maker.

Well I kind of used Paint shop pro for my skins. I have not posted them anywhere yet. You get some good effects on that.
I have enven heard if you get 3D studion Max you can do awsome graphics, and really pimp up your skin,
but still the best handy graphics package would be adobe photoshop, and like iomegajaz
says you can easily find a crack

The one thing that paintshop pro has that photoshop does not, is the COMMAND HISTORY. You can undo actions which you did 5 hours ago. It's amazingly useful.

Photoshop, on the other hand, can only undo the very last action done.

Yeah but still one special point about paint shop pro is that the interface is much more user-friendly.

By the way does anyone know if it is possible to get plugins for paintshop pro like there is for Adobe!

When I make skins, I usually use Adobe 5.5, but it is hard to use, sometomes-i use it to resize images for the posbar, but unless you are doing a 3d skin, i see nothing wrong with ms paint.

actually, I think that the newer versions of photoshop can undo many, many things, not just one. but I think it also removes any changes after the spot you go to. Does PSP have a sort of "effects list," like avs, so you can take away selected features instead of a "history" pallete, like PS?

i proudly use PSP-5... it's the best in my opinion, and i've, how shall we say, "obtained" adobe photoshop and who-ever said it was right - it isn't very user-friendly...

also, PSP-5 is fun to use because you can experiment endlessly once you know what everything does... especially if you alter a few of its' hidden settings.. *grinz* not that i breach the copyright by editing the software - oh no.. hehe

(BTW... DarkTower... get your name from the Shadow Keep song? or... never mind.. hehe)

Photoshop's interface has been years in the
making- anyone you has worked with PS 2 will
know my sentiments exactly....

And- yeah, DarkTower refers to what exactly?

I'm thinking of a milton bradley game
from the 1970s i believe.... one of the
first electronic board games... real fun as
I remember...

Damn. I own Photoshop 5.5 AND Paint Shop Pro 6 (yes I paid for them, that's why I charge clients as much money as I do), and PSP just can't cut it. Photoshop is just flat out better. Now, the GIF Animator that comes with PSP is fantastic for "I need it now" animations, but for still images, PS5.5 is king.

And 5.0 and 5.5 both have the History pallete. Depending on how much RAM you allocate, you can undo many many many steps. You can even undo after a save.

I don't think the extent to which you can "go back" using the History feature in PS5.0 and up is limited by the amount of RAM you have. I've only got 32mb RAM and I can always undo every step I take, right up to "Open".

The trick is to change the setting in Preferences, so that the History Dialog can contain more steps than the default setting of 20. (I use 100 just in case)

btw. I've never paid for PS or PSP, yet I can remember when PS4.0 came out, and everyone went "Layers? What the fuck are layers?"

Ahhh, the good old days.

ps. I think Photoshop's GUI is the best one out there. Saying it's not user friendly is like saying that FrontPage Express doesn't generate enough lines of utter crap into HTML files. (Any web developers will get that one)

pps. Not that I use FrontPage Express. I mean, ewww. Who would?

Hey guys the new version of PSP is out (7 beta), well what they say is that its got new effects. The only thing I see lacking in PSP is the effects. With photoshop all you need to get is a plugin. and there are numerous, so you have better command of the effects that could be applied to you package (eg. eyecandy).
Thats not so with psp. The sittuation about the interface, is that if you ever start up with PSP you can never accept photoshop coz PSP alway seems easier

As far as animated gifs go, if you bought PS 5.5, you should have got it's sister program, Adobe Image ready. It is EXCELLENT
for optimizing the colors for the smallest
file size available.

Furthermore, I find it very capable for
animated .GIF production as far as i'm
concerned.
