Makin skins

I'd like to say that I'm fairly artistic in computers and real life, but I'm not to bright at the techical stuff that isn't CG related, but I understand things when they are explained to me. Now, given I make all my lil' .bmp files (BTW, how do I know how many bitmaps and all that jazz I need) how do I turn the mess into a skin? Magic? Give me a simple step by step and I should get it, I'm not too stupid!
