I'm a PSP user myself, but if you go to http://infoseek.go.com and type photoshop into the search engine and then search within the results for tutorials you should get scads of info on it.

Photoshop will not fail you, it is the skin itself which presents a problem. I, personally, take all the base skin .bmp's, put them on one canvas, using a layer for each. From there, you can work on each .bmp, while at the same time being able to see all the others. Makes comparison painting a breeze. Just make sure you convert your canvas(image>mode>RGB color).

The best advise I would give you for Photoshop is ALWAYS keep an unflattened version of each part of the skin. You obviously have to flatten the image to turn it into a .bmp, but save this as a different name. Then you can come back and fiddle with different layers, and move stuff around so its lined up right etc, with ease. I just know so many people who have flattened and image, saved it and then wanted to edit it and can't. I tell you now you will need to fiddle alot to get your skin just the way you want it. Good luck
