Can Winamp 2.80 automatically sort by filename when launched?
I have a bunch of albums, each in their own file, that have the track number in the filename.
Whenever I put an album into Winamp in any way (select all tracks or select folder, right click, Play in Winamp)(drag all or folder into already opened Winamp) Winamp plays them in random order unless I tell it to sort by filename. Yes, I already checked - "Shuffle" is off. |

ctrl+p > preferences > options > enable 'sort files on load'
this will sort the files by whatever is displayed in the playlist. you want filenames: preferences > plugins > input > nullsoft mpeg audio decoder > title > uncheck 'use id3v1/v2 tags' this works only if you add the the files in winamp with either the playlist menu, the main menu or the eject button on the main window the files are sorted alphabetically by windows if you use the ntfs file system. you can only use ntfs on windows nt/2000/xp/2003 it's in the offitial bug list: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=51934 |

And I suppose that the programmers couldn't be bothered fixing this, even though Winamp 2 has been updated several times since ithasbeen on the official bug list....
Why bother having the list then? |

afaik, It's a Windows bug/problem, not a Winamp one.
It's the way Windows 9x/ME (or any FAT32 file system) sends files to apps. The problem doesn't exist under WinNT/2k/XP with NTFS file system. Use the Winamp interface instead of Explorer. Well, that's what Justin said anyway

it's an incomplete feature: a program can sort files itself that are added through drag+drop or the explorer shell extension. foobar2000 does this for example

Like I said, the programmers can't be bothered fixing it.
They need to realize that people often use free software because they can't afford to buy it. That means they can't afford the newest version of Windows either. I'm sure if the programmers really wanted to,they could make Winamp sort by filename on loading regardless of what Windows does. They are just passing the buck. I think I'll look for another player... |
