Help - Cannot play CD's!

Hi all - got a prob - normal files are fine in 2.91, but CD's won't play (the CD is playing, but no output or visual on the display).

I think this may have something to do with a a plug-in I took off this site which was to route the output of the CD to let me make mp3's of CD's.

I uninstalled Winamp, and dl'ed 2.91 again, but the problem persisted.

Help!!

In Winamp...
1. Ctrl+P (for Preferences)
2. Plug-ins > Input
3. double click 'Nullsoft CD/LineIn plug-in'
4. checkmark 'Enable digital audio extraction when possible'
5. close & restart Winamp

...before reopening winamp
go to the winamp\plugins folder
and if it's there
remove or delete in_cdreader.dll
(or rename it to in_cdreader.dll.off - for backup purposes)

If 3rd-party CDReader plugin was installed
then it will be overriding the default in_cdda plugin

With DAE enabled (as per JM's instructions above)
you no longer need to use the CDReader plugin.

Allright! Excellent - problem solved.

Now two more quick q's for you guys -

When I select say 10 tracks in the open file dialog, it plays them in random order. This happens when I hit the 'next' button as well. How do I turn this off?

Also, I am routing Winamp through an RME Hammerfall audio card (a 24 channel professional 24bit/96khz interface - we are a recording studio). It is flawless except for two things -

1. When minimizing/maximizing Winamp, the audio is interrupted for about 1/4 second - very annoying.

2. At the end of every song, there is a glitch where the song ends, then plays a brief snippet of the end again before stopping (also 1/4 second).

Any ideas?

Thanks for the time.

- Tracks playing random...
Is Shuffle on? Press "S" or the Shuffle button to toggle random mode.

- Sound problem...
Are the latest drivers for the card installed? Try updating the card's drivers.

Which output plug-in are you using in Winamp, waveOut or DirectSound. If using waveOut try DirectSound.
1. Ctrl+P (for Preferences)
2. Plug-ins > Output
3. highlight DirectSout
4. close out of prefs.
Note: The highlighted output plug-in is the current one.

- No luck? Please post a reply with some system specs...
Windows Version?
Memory?
CPU & Speed?
DirectX version? (Start button > Run... > type DXDIAG > click OK > System tag)
Soundcard?
Video?
Does the trouble occur with just CDs or other media types (MP3, WAV, OGG, MOD, AVI etc.)?
Are you using any third party Winamp plug-ins (DSP/Effects, General Purpose)?

Shuffle was on-thanks.

As for the sound problem -

I'm using DirectSound with the outputs coming out of the 1&2 ADAT Lightpipe outputs, then into a Steinberg AD/DA Hardware box.

WinXP Home
1GB RAM
P4 2.53
2 x 200 GB 8 MB Cache HDD's
DX 8.1
RME Hammerfall HDSP 96/52 Audio Interface
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420

No third party plug-ins in Winamp, that I know of. (Though I do have DX plug ins on my system for professional multitrack recording - I'm not sure if that counts).

The problem occurs with all audio, be it CD, wave files, video, etc...
the audio just cuts out for an annoying 1/4 second.

Now that Winamp 5 has officially been released, try upgrading. You do not need to get the pro version if you don't want it. All the same features of WA2 are in the WA5 standard version. WA5 is awesome! Let us know if you are still having problems.

Yep - Installed W5 and it's actually worse! Now I get a drop-out when I pull down the little "sine wave" in the upper left corner (the open location etc... dialogue.)

This did not happen in W2.91

BY the way the audio card is probably not at fault. This is a $600 card in use in the worlds biggest audio recording facilities.

Try the following in Winamp
1. Ctrl+P
2. Plug-ins > Output
3. double click DirectSound
4. Device tab
5. in the dropdown list select 'Primary Sound Driver' or what closely resembles your sound card
6. Apply button
7. buffering tab
8. click 'Restore to deafult values'
9 Apply button
10. close out of prefs

Just to be on the safe side, run your virus scanner. Also check for spyware/foistware with Spybot Search&Destroy.

I am starting to run out of ideas here.

While you're in DirectSound config, turn off all fading as well perhaps.

Upgrade to DirectX v9.0b
Make sure you've got the LATEST drivers for your soundcard.

Take a look at these Winamp settings:

Prefs -> Plugins -> Output -> DirectSound Output -> config:

Device tab:
Select your soundcard from the Device drop-down menu
Checkmark "enable hardware acceleration"

Buffering tab:
Buffer ahead on track change

This may need increasing to get rid of glitches between trackchanges

If it's already set to some high value, then move the slider down a bit.

Default main buffer value = 2000ms
Prebuffer slider: Set this to some small value, eg. 200ms

Other tab:
If "remove silence" is checked
then make sure the cutoff value isn't too large
(note: to the left is classed as higher, eg. -15dB)
so move it to the right, for less cut off
(eg. mine is set to -40dB)

Fading tab:
As UJ & JM say, disable all fades

Prefs -> Plugins -> DSP/FX
Select "none"
