15 Steps To Failure?
Ok, I've become rather frustrated. I'm getting nowhere on my aspiring TV station! I've laid everything I've done so far in numbers, hopefully you'll be able to help me. (Computer A is a bog standard Windows XP computer with TV Card Capture capabilities. Computer B in a Sony Vaio laptop with a 533MHz processor & 64MB RAM - 6GB HD)
1. Used capture card on computer A to record programme for TV station and saved as WMV 2. Converted WMV to AVI on computer B using Video Edit Magic 2.2 3. Downloaded NSVTools to Program Files/NSVTools 4. Created a copy of NSVTools to C:\ (Computer B's DOS doesn't like spaces) 5. Converted AVI to NSV using 'nsvate.exe' and saved to C:\NSVFun 6. Downloaded and installed SHOUTcast Server 7. After testing all day and consulting with fellow members of the same ISP, found out with SHOUTcast Winamp DJ Plugin, came to the conclusion isn't compatible with Freeserve 8. Downloaded and installed Peercast 9. Created 'headers.txt' with the following: changeme content-type:video/nsv icy-metadata:0 icy-name:My NSV Stream icy-genre:Video icy-pub:0 icy-br:128 icy-url:http://www.shoutcast.com icy-irc:#chan icy-icq:1234567 icy-aim:SomeUser icy-reset:1 ...and saved to C:\NSVTools 20. Changed password for localhost's Peercast to changeme 11. Opened Command Line & set C:\NSVTools as default directory 12. Ran the following syntax as told on http://peercast.hearview.net/manual/video.html: nsvscsrc localhost:7145:headers.txt C:\NSVFun\Promo.nsv 13. Recieved: [re]Connecting to localhost:7145 14. Followed by: ![]() 15. And here I am stuck, asking for help! Where am I going wrong? I've followed the sticky-ised tutorial countless times through, really I need an idiot-proof guide ^_^! Thanks in advance, Lee Cherry - LC:TV Last edited by LC:TV; 18th December 2003 at 18:18. |

Just realised there's no step for me installing the VP6 codec. I'll go redownload and install just to make sure this isn't the problem.
So no advice for me, none at all anyone? |

You should follow the advice of slavas and test your NSV system on a shoutcast server to make sure that the nsv portion is configured correctly.
Regarding Peercast, I would suggest contacting the developer of that software regarding the configuration and or use of that software as they would be most familiar with that. Scenic Television is your ambient window to the world - - www.ScenicTelevision.com |

Edit in regard to above edit: SHOUTcast servers don't work with my ISP full stop. I've tried contacting Freeserve about it but they never got back to me. The NSV files are fine, I'll upload some and if you wouldn't mind, could you please see if they run ok at your end.
Peercast have their own tutorial which I've managed to understand a lot better than the Nullsoft one. http://peercast.hearview.net/manual/video.html Slavas - the SHOUTcast Server isn't compatible with my ISP (Freeserve Anytime) so I'm stuck with Peercast. I've tried broadcasting both radio and NSV with the SHOUTcast Sever, both of which fail miserably. I've managed to broadcast radio through Peercast in the past, so surely NSV can't be that hard. Installed VP6 and still getting the same errors. |

I'm getting more and more confused as we go on... I can't even connect to my Peercast server! Strange thing is I can with SHOUTcast DJ plugin. Can't with Command Prompt (see illegal operation screen cap in first post) for TV.
Here are a couple of NSVs I've converted, they run fine on my system so still can't figure out where I'm going wrong. Very cheap promo recorded on Win MM - http://members.lycos.co.uk/tmgc/Promo.nsv Myself featured on NFL Sunday - http://members.lycos.co.uk/tmgc/NFLSunday.nsv |

In nsvscsrc syntax, try just writing out path to folder with nsvs in it, not to the actual nsv.

Glad I could help. What kind of video you gonna stream? It seems the only stuff on anymore is pr0n and family guy. Both are superb, but I like variety :-D

No pr0n on LC:TV
![]() My plans are: Bo' Selecta!, NFL, The Bill, Only Fools & Horses, Ed Edd n Eddy, The Office, Peter Kay Live, WWE Events Hopefully I'll get a fair few done by the weekend, a week of loop broadcasts just to test everything out, then hopefully new content everyday! I also plan to produce a prerecorded chat show. I know a few people who'd love to work on one, even if the budget is £0!! Like Trisha or Sally only with one shakey camera and bizarre stories. |

First thing tomorrow morning I'll be there, it's 1.53AM GMT (Leeds, England) so I need to get a bit of sleep.
I could do with one last piece of help if someone wouldn't mind lending a hand. If you read this message in the next 30 minutes (01.54 - 24) then please see what you get out of: lctv.servehttp.com:7144/stream/1B3D1C2A182393665170ADE4836E3D0D.nsv Right now I'm just running a loop of a cheap promo followed by a clip of me featured on NFL Sunday. Hopefully the test will give the go ahead to start some serious work on LC:TV.

'Tis because I'm not broadcasting right now. Have been for the past 15 hours or so, but not right now
.The test will be Jackass The Movie, fits perfectly since LC:TV's main genre is comedy.

I tried to view several of the video streams, they did not work. I used the yp listing provided within the program itself. I was not trying to view your stream, because it was not listed in the software yp directory

Nope - I've quit using Peercast. There's been a lot of testing tonight, a lot of mysteries solved! I'm trying alternative methods (which SHOULD be) compatible with Freeserve Anytime ISP. For now I think I'll collect content then launch the station after the new year.

Shall i tell them the funny solution? :P
If the ShoutCAST server port is 8000 make sure you're typing 8001 in the command prompt for nsvsrc ;D |

Might as well be 81 on Freeserve, heh.
![]() I did have a go at 8001 though, but still just the same "0% buffering" message as we got when we were testing last night. |

"0% Buffering"
I get the same error message... I.. 1. Downloaded NSVTools to Program Files/NSVTools 2. Converted MPEG to NSV using 'nsvate.exe' and saved to C:\NSVTest 3. Downloaded and installed SHOUTcast Server 4. Created 'headers.txt' with the following: changeme content-type:video/nsv icy-metadata:0 icy-name:My NSV Stream icy-genre:Video icy-pub:0 icy-br:128 icy-url:http://www.shoutcast.com icy-irc:#chan icy-icq:1234567 icy-aim:SomeUser icy-reset:1 ...and saved to C:\NSVTools 5. Opened Command Line & set C:\NSVTools as default directory 6. Ran the following syntax as told on http://peercast.hearview.net/manual/video.html: nsvscsrc localhost:8000:headers.txt C:\NSVTest\Falling_Down.nsv Anyone I give link to my server get's 0% Buffering. I havn't done anything with Peercast, didn't see that in the tutorial on streaming NSV video. Would appreciate if someone knew how to fix this. Sorry if this has been answered before. |

For Peercast support, I would suggest contacting the developer of that particular software.

Well I would have got it working fine it if wasn't for bleeding Freeserve. winamp5 and myself did two hours worth of tests on Friday night and found the best way to go really is to invest in a SHOUTcast server. As I found out, preferably not on a 56kbs ISP. I.e. Freeserve Anytime.
Anyway, I plan to launch LC:TV next mid-February. By then I should have content converted, higher quality connection & equipment, and found a server.

Hi everyone:
Two things LCTV..... 1). WHY are you encoding your videos as Windows Media and THEN converting THOSE into AVI files? I would think it would make MUCH more sense to encode directly as an AVI file from the start. 2). Do you not have an alternative ISP to Freeserve in your area? Seems to me this sounds like one of those old Freenets that we had (??) here in the U.S. Have no idea if they're still in business or not. 1). The only videos I encode into WMV are the promotional videos. I make all of these in Windows Movie Maker 2 which only exports WMVs. It does make much more sense to start with AVIs, which is why most programmes are converted directly from AVI to NSV.
2). There are hundreds of ISPs in our area, Freeserve is one of the cheapest. BUT, for the same price I can have NTL Broadband - hence the February 2004 date for broadcasting. Merry Christmas .

One thing you might want to check into is IP Mulitcast.
The europeans have their networks wired up for use with that. Most ISP's in the americas dont allow access to that feature. Basically IP Multicast is similiar to P2P but its hardware based and not software based. More info on IP Multicast: www.nwfusion.com/research/ipmulticast.html This guy writes software for IP Multicast use with winamp. www.live.com Scenic Television is your ambient window to the world - - www.ScenicTelevision.com |

LCTV - Why did you think you could stream video to X number of users over the internet on a 56k modem in the first place?

Erm, why wouldn't I think I could stream to X number of users over the internet on a 56k modem in the first place? You can broadcast a station from a 28kbs if you really wanted to. Granted the quality would be below poor but it's still possible. You read me wrong - I have never once had the intention of launching LC:TV on a 56kbs connection. However I've had the intention of testing the tools and files on a 56kbs connection, but that's about it.

Hi everyone:
LCTV: I've got news for you, but if you're on a 56K DIALUP connection, then your UPLOAD spped is going to be NO MORE than 32K. But once you start streaming, you can't do ANYTHING else on the Internet (you can't even check your email). You can b arely stream MP3s on a dialup. At least if you have a broadband connection, you can do things such as checking the email, browsing the web, etc. If I were you, I'd wait till you get on your broadband pipe BEFORE testing your videos. I say this because you're only gonna get ONE viewer, so what's the point? Cheers for now & Happy Holidays everyone ![]() Patrick Cook Proud Member - Electronic Frontier Foundation - http://www.eff.org/ Program Director Jeeper One Radio Network Jeeper One Television Network Denver, Colorado http://kpdcnetradio.***********/ http://kpdcnettv.***********/ BLOG PAGE - http://kpdcnettv.***********/blog.html Pat Cook Englewood, CO |

Even broadband will leave you yearning for more, but its leaps and bounds above dial-up. My upstream is a little over 300kbps (which is a little better than most), and I still can only do 5 60kbps streams (60kbps looks like total sh*t).
I have original content that I use, and although its bad, this kind of bandwith doesn't do it justice. If I wasn't so poor, I'd buy some fancy shoutcast service from a company. Point being, don't expect much unless you have the money to pay for a server. |

With all and all taken into consideration, I'm not going to continue with the LC:TV project. Not only because of the original February delay (with what would now also seem to be poor quality even on Broadband), but because I haven't got the time or money to devote to the project I thought I would. Of coure there's gonna be some great channels coming up the more people find out about NSV, but LC:TV won't be one of them. A big thanks for all the support during the very short stay. Perhaps an LC:RN Radio Network will pop up one day, but for now I'm leaving everything at a standstill.
Merry Christmas, Lee |

Hi everyone:
Lee....You know you could always use NSV to set up a webcam stream for your radio station. Heck, I would imagine there are a number who don't even run radio stations, yet they use NSV for their cams. A webcam stream doesn't require much bandwidth, though a broadband pipe would be more ideal than a dialup connection as then you'd get more viewers. Just something to think about ![]() Cheers for now & Happy Holidays ![]() Patrick Cook Proud Member - Electronic Frontier Foundation - http://www.eff.org/ Program Director Jeeper One Radio Network Jeeper One Television Network Denver, Colorado http://kpdcnetradio.***********/ http://kpdcnettv.***********/ BLOG PAGE - http://kpdcnettv.***********/blog.html Pat Cook Englewood, CO |
