Really frustrating problems...

I have installed Winamp. I have installed and configured the SHOUTcast DSP plug-in according to the readme instructions. I have installed and configured the SHOUTcast server according to the readme file.

I have put a short, blank, 32kbps mono MP3 in the contents folder and named it music (music.mp3).

I have tested the connection from a seperate computer and it connects under http://MYIPADDRESS:PORT/content/music.pls but will not play the stream. Instead it plays the music.mp3. Well at least I think its playing the music.mp3 file as there is no sound, and Winamp tells me its playing in mono, and the clip lasts about a second.

At the moment I am playing MP3s through Winamp from the playlist, with the DSP input set to Winamp (Recommended).

I have a feeling the above paragraph is incorrect but I dont think it should have any relevence to the playing of the music.mp3 file.

Can anyone help me please?

You are trying to link to a live stream with a URL for On-Demand.

------

If you're trying to do a live stream, link using this format: http://yourIP:yourPORT/listen.pls

Replace "yourIP" with your IP (which you can find here) and "yourPORT" your portbase defined by your DNAS (server) config file. The default is 8000.

If you have a dynamic IP, you can get a static name at www.no-ip.com.

------

If you're trying to do On-Demand, check out the Sticky post titled:

Scroll down a bit and look for the section titled:

OMG... The only thing I was doing wrong was putting content/music.pls instead of listen.pls!

It all seems to be working fine now.

Thanks for your help.

Can you just explain to me why and how listen.pls works when content/music.pls doesnt?

because it doesn't matter where the music comes from, it will always be http://yourIP:yourPort/listen.pls. you can play music off your z: drive, inside the 87th folder, it doesn't matter. it's kinda like web sites. the pages can be stored in /var/www/html, or /home/username/public_html/ or /my/web/site/owns/yours/doesnt/ but you would always go to www.yourwebsite.com to visit it. otherwise, you'd have to dynamically update the link and your listeners would have to reconnect for every song and that would suck.

The /listen.pls extension merely tells the browser to open the stream directly in WinAmp, opposed to opening the server status page.

When you use the /content file extension, it looks for the on-demand material in your content folder. It'll have trouble finding it if it doesn't exist.
