5.01 .wal skins won't work... help!?!?!!

I'm running winamp 5.01 I had to delete the file gen_ff.dll to get winamp to load. because of the "assertion failed ... line 131" error. And then winamp would load up and work. But I can't get cool skins to work, is the above issue related?
I'm running the full version not lite. My problem is that I want to use the modern skins and none seem to work. Can anyone help me? .wal skins won't work but .wsz skins do. All my favorite skins are .wal...is there a solution to my problem.?

system: amd athon xp 2100, running windows 2000 pro. more than enough ram, and hard drive space.

You deleted the one file that reads WAL files: modern skin support (gen_ff.dll)! You'd need a clean install of Winamp5 to correct your problem, and read the following thread on the Assertion Failed, line 131 error:

Hope this helps.

The assertion failed error is probably more likely to be a problem with an individual skin rather then gen_ff.dll.

Uninstall / Reinstall as mentioned above

I'll try that... it's just that every time I reinstall it I have the same problem.

It's the font issue with arial.ttf, as explained in the thread linked to by jmatthews112

My "Modern Skin" work-around

I have tried everything to get the modern skins to work.

I am using windows XP, I never get any error message (like the assertion error mentiond previously) and my Arial.ttf is in tack and in the right place. I have twice completly uninstalled winamp (along with manually deleting the winamp folder).

When I try to install any skin (I have only tried the "top user rated" skins like MMD3) and it does the standard download routine and as soon as the download has ended, my skin changes from the "Windamp Modern" default skin to the classic winamp skin. I am using the 5.01 full version of winamp (4.03 MB) and when you review the plug-in's, the "Modern Plug-in support" plug-in is there.

I have also reviewed the ".wsz" folder type settings as mentioned in a previous post to make sure that everything is set correctly in windows xp. All looks good there as well.

In order for me to get the skins to work, I discovered this work-around:

Instead of just "clicking" on the download link for the skin, I did a RIGHT mouse click and selected "save target as" and saved the skin in a download folder on my PC, once saved, it's icon displays the winamp lightning bolt (as is should to indicated that the file type is associated properly). When I double click my left mouse button on the file to open it, it instantly installs into winamp 5.01 and wolah..... My new skin is displayed.

I hope this helps anyone else experiencing this issue

Your issue sounds more like the one where you need to empty your internet cache.

If using Internet Explorer...
Close browser
Control Panel -> Internet Options -> General tab:
Temporary Internet Files -> Delete Files -> Ok

Apart from that, yeah, the "right click -> save target as" method is also another known workaround.

btw, WSZ files are classic skins, WAL files are modern skins.
