'Impressive' songs

By 'impressive' I don't mean the best song ever made in the world etc. (there are already plenty of other such threads in this forum

) This thread is more thought-provoking

Say, if you have to recommend your favourite artist to your friend (assuming he doesn't know about the artist), you normally make him listen to one or two songs by the artist, to create an impression about the artist in him.

Now, this song is very important in the sense that it creates a lasting impression in him: if he likes it, it creates a good impression & he will start liking the artist too (or even become a big fanatic of him). On the other hand, if the song is bad, he will despise the artist probably till the end of his life!

If you were to recommend an artist, what songs would you specifically choose for this purpose? Say, I would like to listen to 'The Cure', what song or two would you recommend me to first listen to?

Mention some your favourite artists and their 'impressive' songs - they don't necessarily have to be their biggest hits, but more of your personal opinion - and who knows, I may end up liking them as well!

I just listened to it & I admit it's pretty good, but somehow not as awe-inspiring as I had expected.

But a very good song none the less, and I'll check them out soon

Anyways, its Someday-Michael Learns to Rock(considering you are not into typical slow-pop songs)

@Triton - It's all personal taste (also depends on your circumstances at the time). Some songs are more than just music...

Renegades of Funk. Not sure how "awe inspiring" it is, but I'm impressed by the song, especially the (although blatantly obvious) message it delivers, and the music it's delivered with.

A band a lot of people here probably haven't heard (except those who've seen the TV crime series "Cold Case". The theme is called "Nara") of. All of their songs are named after ancient cities (Pompeii, Ebla, Isfahan, Tikal, et cetera... All very tribal stuff; drums, chanting. Makes you feel as if you're in a music session 2000 years ago (or with the song "Tikal", being chased through a jungle by headhunters).) E.S. Posthumus has some of their music used in movie trailers (Spider-Man (pretty sure), Planet of the Apes, I Robot).

E.S. Posthumus - Pompeii

Same prob as Alanis with this group. Their Fush Yu Mang album is way different than their Astro Lounge album. Can't say I really enjoy the former, but I love the Astro Lounge album.

Oh yes.

A sexy voice gliding on a wall of feedback. What impresses me most is the originality, to this day those first few EP's are still a unique sound.
