why can i rip CDs in iTunes for free but not Winamp 5?
It makes no sense that i can download iTunes and rip/burn CDs at full speed for free, but i can't do it in winamp. what's up with that?

well.. Nullsoft has to pay for the cd ripping/burning engine (Sonic) used on Winamp 5! Simple as that... Probablly I-Tunes uses a engine created by Apple or something! Any way most people uses Nero for burning and CDex for ripping!

Also, iirc, some big exec dude from Thomson Multimedia is also on Apple's board of directors, or something like that, so their mp3 encoder licence fee is already conveniently covered.
And, as Kado said, Winamp 5's Sonic Burning/Ripping engine is 3rd-party, and cannot be free. More info http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....13#post1128513 |

hmm... in theory, winamp (i guess nullsoft would be the better name to use) could create a ripping.burning engine that wouldn't have to be paid for... but that would subtract GREATLY from the wa5 development (i know it is out, but future releases or bug fixes). besides, do you really think AOheLl would allow that.....?
When you take a hand and chop the fingers off... what do u get? That would be the knub. |

you would still have to pay for the mp3 encoder licence
writing your own engine would take a LONG ASSED time |
