Hissing/Crackling sound during ANY mp3 playback

This problem seems to have arisen relatively recently (have never had it before).

Whenever i play anything in winamp e.g. mp3, ogg, mpc - i get a hissing and crackling sound that is very loud and disturbs the playback.

I have done all the obvious stuff such as uninstalling winamp/reinstalling. I thought it may have been a corruption with plugins so i installed it fresh without plugins on another drive - STILL the same problem.

Music and media playback is fine with Windows Media Player.
This problem really baffles me!

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

this mite do it.............

I had exactly the same problem (even resorting to using WMP for a bit) and messed around with winamp. i think i found the solution, basically in the config>equalizer i turned 'auto' and 'on' off . this seemed to get rid of the crackling noise heard when i turn the music up. Hope this sorts it out for you.
