avs studio lockup, HELP

[METALGEAR]

have have just made the move from winamp 2.91 to 5.1 but he problem i have still remains.
i have a hercules radoen 9000 pro 128mb ddr gfx card and since i got it i have had problems wih the overlay onto the desktop.
everytime without fail it crashes when i enable overlay then click "set desktop to color".
frankly this is starting to pi$$ me off!
i have tried different colour modes [eg 16bit or 32 bit}
my screen res is 1024*768

any1 got any ideas?
the help would be very much appreiiciated!
