![]() I am not sure of the usage of band - I think it can mean any group that works in concert - like a band of thieves or band of brothers. Would that make an a cappella ensemble not a band either?

In musical terms, the word 'band' implies instruments. It's passed down through generations - think 1850, any english town on a Sunday afternoon. The Salvation Army band plays at the pavillion in the local park... the brass instruments for all to see.
When I see Westlife (being introduced as a band) I think 'Where's the trombone? Where's the tuba?' You've left your kit in the dressing room you spotty herbert! Perhaps - 'Boy Group'

How could you start criticizing about the word “boy-bands” here? Enough to get pissed off No matter why they are called boy-bands …you can’t forget they have a great contribution in music world so if you say something insulting about them ,it will surely piss off a music (boy-band) fan...... Anyways found this in another forum….though didn’t like the idea that they are called “pretty crap” …...but need to agree with the point that the return of boy-bands is a must… specially if you think of the young generation who are now into the real crap music which represents sex, violence blah blah blah…. "was reading this article in our newspaper the other day. said somthn round the lines of this: she apparently figured that boy bands, tho the music is pretty crapped up, should return & take the leading role for lil kids again. now theyre all into music by ppl such as 50 & beyonce. theyre music is pretty xplicit & is all about sex, looks, figure etc. where as w/boy bands they sent messages like 'i dont care who you are...what uve done, as long as u luv me'. all their gals were dressed properly, they encouraged pure, genuine luv, etc. i had to agree with that bit. My god Apola. I think that is the most intelligent thing I've ever heard you say <hats off>
On the flip side, it's the mainstream kids that listen to that. Quite a bit of my music is more on the Political side, most of it non violent political, and more than a bit of it deals with love although it tends towards the more depressing side of it. Not all modern music has to do with hate. It just seems to be the most news worthy... |

Simply put, they, the boy "bands," are tools. For them, it is not the desire to further musical creativity; it is not aspiration to express true, raw emotions from first-hand accounts; it is not the inclination to make people think on much deeper levels or construct political and social consciousness; it is the absolute greed of the bottom line that fuels their efforts. What you see and what you hear is merely a fallacy. |

Same as I said on these forums years ago about insipid pop acts such as Boyzone - they aren't bands, they're just groups. Of men. Who sing.

Okay, where'd I put the old blood pressure pills? Can't find 'em! Ah, Mr Marley will do just as well. @dj egg
that is the problem with a lot of bands that never or not frequently release singles and only release albums - they don't hit the lists- in the 80's there were a couple of shows on dutch radio that told you about new releases and played a few tracks from the album- nowdays it's only the shit in the top 40 that makes it to the radio - too bad- and golden oldies stations only stick with the wellknown stuff ( queen, eagles, beatles etc) |

Well, kind of insulting if you take the matter of Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi the wrong way...
