Aspi?

Win 98SE - OEM
AMD Athlon 1900 CPU 266FSB
512 DDR
Creative Live SB 5.1 Sound Card

I have just downloaded Winamp 5.02. I can't open Winamp at all. When I double click on the desktop icon nothing happens.

The reason I downloaded Winamp is that WMP9 stopped working and just gave me an error message when I tried to play an mp3. It might be related to the problems that I have had recently with the Mostrar Dialer, as Windows Media Player 9 behaved OK before that.

The Error message in WMP9 was:
'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.'

More information
'0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
*Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
*Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound device's documentation.
*You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again.'

I don't know if it's relevant, but I'm also running Creative SB Live! version 007 (with 1024 Synth Voices)(driver for SB Live = C:\WINDOWS\INF\VSB010X.INF).

I re-installed both Creative SB 5.1 and WMP9, but still couldn't play mp3 files anywhere. Having looked at some other forums warning against WMP9, I decided to "roll back" to Windows Media Player 6.4, but the problem didn't go away.

Music CD's - They are working fine in CD player (the little one that comes with windows 98) and Sound Blaster Creative Playstation 2. Music CD's won't play in Media Player 6 or Winamp. No idea what is playing wav files. The only programme that I can get to play midi files is Windows Media Player 6.4. I can't get any of this kit to play mp3s.
When I try to open an mp3 in WMP6.4, I get an 80040256 error msg.

In addition, I'm now getting an eror msg saying msgsrv32 is not responding.

I would be delighted if I could get WinAmp to play mp3s and music CDs.

I don't know if it's a windows problem, SB, or what.
Please can you reply in simple terms without any techy jargon - I'm a novice.
Thanks

Al.

First of all, no hardware/software manufacturers support overclocking.

XP 1900+
Clock speed: 1596 MHz
FSB: 133 MHz
Multiplier: 12x
Vcore voltage: 1.75v

You say your OS = Win98SE OEM
Who is the OEM (original equipment manufacturer)?
ie. what is the make & model of either the pc and/or the motherboard?

Have you been to www.soundblaster.com/drivers/ to get the correct/latest SB Live drivers for Win98SE ?

What version of DirectX is installed?
DirectX 8 or later is recommended (latest = 9.0b)

start > run > dxdiag
Version information can be found in the General tab.
You should also run all tests in the other tabs.

Apart from that, try a clean install of Winamp 5.02 without the Sonic Burning/Ripping engine (uncheck this in the installer).
There's been a few reports of Win98SE incompatibility.

Re: ASPI
This is only required for playing Audio CD's in Digital Audio Extraction mode.
The Adaptec ASPI layer is included with the default Win98 setup, so it should already be installed.
You can try running the Adaptec ASPI Check utility to make sure it is properly installed.
Latest Adaptec ASPI Layer for Win98 = here (v4.71.2)

If the problem persists, provide the required information etc, and supply a StartUpList
(unzip to any folder and run, attach result log file here).

I wish you could hear the beautiful music

Sir DJ,
It works. I can hear MP3s again. My sons are going to be totally amazed and very impressed that this problem is fixed. The 15 yr old bet me that I would have to take the PC back to the shop to sort it out.
If my name was Queen Elizabeth II you would now be receiving a knighthood. You gave me a really comprehensive answer, with a lot of suggestions. And you told me what to do in language that I could understand - very important - a lot of forums talk jargon and simple men like me are left wondering what it all means - so thanks.

The minute I upgraded DirectX, Winamp worked perfectly.

A big thank you for solving this headache for me.
You are a Saint amongst men.
