What is the best way to tag compilations for the Winamp Media Libary? I was thinking on a tag layout that looked something this: Various - Songtitle (by Artist)
If you write the preformers name as the artist it gets so messy after a while, with hundres of different artists

Then in "Comments" I place the artist in there. |

Even with various artist compilations and soundtracks, I still tag the correct artist in the artist field, and the other tags as I would a regular album as well. And I used to be frustrated that Winamp ML would scatter all compilation tracks to the wind in artist view. But at the same time, I didn't want to re-tag those tracks with "various artist" in all the artist fields, because that would cause problems with SSA music navigation in my car's audio system.
So, up until yesterday as a matter of fact, I would just leave various artist compilation albums out of the Winamp ML, and instead create a playlist for each one, so as to keep the songs by different artists all together. But then yesterday I accidently did a ML scan of my high-level music directory (I:\Music\), and it loaded everything. As I began to go through and remove each various artist compilation and soundtrack, I realized I kinda liked the fact that I could browse by artist, even the ones with only 1 or 2 songs, in the left window, and if I wanted to see the tracks from each album grouped together, regardless of artist, there's the window to the right. I know this is elementary, but I just realized it wasn't causing me any problem the way it is, so I'm keeping it this way. I can still find my music by any method I choose, and sorted as I choose. I'm a psychosomatic sister running around without a leash. |

In MediaMonkey, you can use both an Artist and Album Artist tag. Artist name goes into the Artist tag, compilation name goes into the Album Artist tag.

MediaMonkey is the best.
For filenames though, it's "C:/DC++/Purchased Albums/Various Artists/<Album or Soundtrack>/# - Filename' Since I know who does the songs, it's easy to tell by filename for me since it's sorted under the albums anyways. No troubles. Scotty Doesn't Know |
